"The high-profile restaurant business fronted by celebrity chef Neil Perry will pay back staff $1.6 million after a Fairfax Media investigation exposed the widespread flouting of workplace laws.
Rockpool Dining Group said it would make the top-up payments after a review of its payroll and rosters. The $1.6 million covers just one financial year, 2017/18."

Rockpool to pay back $1.6m to staff

Hmmm, I wonder if I can make a claim for several hundred 'uninspired' meals?

Rockpool are not the only mob being looked at. It seems the Restaurant/Food service industry has been in the habit of underpaying staff hoping they'll keep quiet due to Gratooities ...

The news reports and ATO super amnesty is a good thing, it allows all companies to look at themselves, get outside audit/advise if needed and make corrections. I know Ive phoned Fairworks about a particular award and got 3 different answers, 2 similar but not the same and then referred to our outsourced advisor/BOOT test because the award interpretation was a grey line. I like to think most employers want to do the right thing but maybe Ive been lucky and thats been the employers Ive worked for.

Boggles the mind given how expensive restaurants are in Australia these days, that they're not even paying their staff properly.

It's what comes from big name restaurants all being owned by investment groups who demand a certain return on their investment.

While the big restaurants and groups should have the capable resources to keep on top of these things, I do feel sorry for those smaller restaurants and cafes as our industrial laws are complicated and paying an employee the correct award is a lot of the times not a black and white answer as Denali has pointed out.

I would imagine that the new owners might be making a claim against the vendors.
