Rex to fly between Australian capital cities

John Sharp has been talking up the apparent success of the new 737 services at CAPA Live.

How much of a grain of salt should we take claims like these with?

I was talking to one of our pilots this morning,” John Sharp said. “He says he’s never done a flight between Melbourne and Adelaide, or back the other way without 160 passengers onboard the aircraft that takes 165 passengers. So it gives you an idea of the load factors that we’re getting."

There was a better report in 'The Australian' where Mr Sharp ranked the ZL B738 routes as (in order from best performing to worst): MEL-ADL/OOL, SYD - OOL, then at the back by a big (negative) margin, MEL - SYD.

This exactly mirrors what those of us who've looked up EF seat maps have found.

Plenty of claims Alan Joyce makes also deserve huge grains of salt.

My guess is Rex will lose millions this year and next on the B738 flights, but overall, QF's financial position is fast becoming diabolical (and perhaps far worse than REX's). No data on what VA 2.0 financial position is, but perhaps also far from good.

Also considering rumours across the web that ZL are picking up 2 of the ex-TT planes. That would suggest ZL is going to have a inconsistent seating layout with 2x all-Y 738s added to the current 2 configs with J class.

They may be used to operate OOL flights as there is no lounge there?

wish Rex would start SYD/BNE & BNE/MEL soon. I'd then use them a lot, as long as no more expensive than QF or VA. Would never ever pay to fly JQ. The only time I ever do, it when trying to get rid of QF points & JQ only option time wise.

Think I read the negotiations with BNE around access weren’t going well. Whilst I guess they’ve supported MEL/SYD/ADL jet services using existing check in space and ground services which operate 7 days a week for most of the day, currently they only serve BNE with 4 Saab flights a week.

Given their experience with SYD-MEL, I suspect these wouldn't be top of Rex's priorities for new routes.

Or else they could just put some J seats in the aircraft.

And still don't know how many seats are on their planes...
IIRC some have 176 and some have 170. They seem to block Row 30 on all services though (looking at ExpertFlyer, I’ve never seen any service with those seats not blocked), so presumably they can be flexible in which aircraft services which sector. So we never know if 90 seats occupied is a 51% or a 53% load factor.

Unlike small local councils, Rex probably can't bully BAC into giving them what they want.

True.

But I have to laugh at all the criticism levelled at Rex around this, when sometimes the increase in charges by councils has been really quite disproportionate.

Yet one certain other airline/marketing group much more quietly bullies the federal government into what they want. All the time.

I read somewhere (the person was being semi-jocular) that our real Prime Minister was a certain airline CEO who seems to automatically get what he wants from Federal and State governments.

Huh? If that were true QF would have got the multi million dollar loan they wanted a few years back

Yes you are correct. Got nothing!
Got nothing.....Qantas...... from Australian Government...hmm some happy to have blinkers on on some airlines!!

That many repatriation flights paid for & what 100+ to come within next 12 months, plus so many other kick backs under the table!
QF get ample support from Aus gov in so many ways.
And so they should to a degree IMO as they are classified as the National Carrier.

My goodness, "Got nothing!"

During the pandemic, certainly an airline starting with Qa has been the national carrier (as far as international traffic goes) , just not the one most think 🤣 🤣
It's one (and the same) world...
