Folks

I'm planning a jaunt to South Africa next May(ish) and currently there are nil rewards flights SYD-JNB.
Historically, is this a route with a decent amount of seats available? I'd prefer Y+ or J on a reward as Y flights currently run $2,00 return and I'd prolly just pay that.
If it makes any difference, all going well I will be WP in 2 months so could try requesting seats. Although WP just seems to be Bronze with a different card colour from recent chat :( and that may just be a long phone wait for no return.

That's about the only way to get QF J seats on the premium long haul routes these days. You very, very rarely see general release of seats on flights to JNB, LAX, LHR, DFW etc.

And then to the next step - any WP have any luck crowbarring 2 x J seats on a return flight out of QF, post Covid?

I was looking for 2 x J seats to JNB return some weeks ago for late May, return mid June. My dates are fixed as we already are locked in to a safari.

Only via Perth was available but I couldn’t make that work with only 3x weekly schedule to and from Perth. So they were there, just not the 63/64… we’re LTS.

This is the first time in 10+ years of going to JNB every year in J, that we have had to buy the tickets… we have always found awards SYD/ JNB / SYD. Never had a problem as long as I jumped on them as soon as they were released. Not this year.

I watch this route like a hawk as half our family is there. My partner had to book a trip back there later this month for personal stuff, and even in Y it was over $3,000 return / $1,800 one-way when booking 6 weeks out.

I set up an Expert Flyer alert and two days after we booked (after no availability for months -- Murphy's Law), some space opened up in J on the SYD-JNB sector across a number of days in late August and beginning September. We snagged that up within two hours of the alert coming through and changed the original one-way ticket into a return trip at a more reasonable price in PY for something next year.

There had been J availability on at least 8-10 days when I booked that morning (and none of which existed the night before). By the afternoon, it was all gone.

Sorry to bump an old thread. I’m flying this route pretty regularly at the moment. Have been booking Y awards (which are easy to find) and find that if you keep checking, Y+ and J do pop up at random intervals. Haven’t had to fly Y yet 🤞🏽

I noticed yesterday there were some completely random days with 2x J awards SYD-JNB this side of Christmas!
