Well I have decided to put all my flights post 1 Sep to QF which will give me gold to Sep 09 - I might need some QF points anyway and might need some y -> J upgrades

Now Simongr, you don't really expect us to believe you are going to be booking into Y now, do you?;)

Sadly I have a HKG-SYD whY flight planned next year due to lack of availability HKG-SYD on a J aaward :(

Just a quick one; award flights on Qantas metal cannot be upgraded using points ...

There is one way award flights can be upgraded - in the extremely unlikely event that some award inventory in business class comes available after a Y award booking has already been made - it is simply a matter of rebooking the award into the J cabin with the extra pts for J + 5,000 pt penalty. Once above 3,600 miles, this uses less pts than upgrading from discount Y (paid) -> J. Of course can't waitlist though, so the chances of upgrading this way are very very low.

I had considered that, but as stated the chances are so low as not worth considering.

The only time I recently saw any significant late award availability appear was in 2005 when when Qantas decided to move QF25/QF26 to MEL from BNE and make QF175/QF176 daily. There was a flurry of rebooking and plenty of U class availability appeared on QF25/QF26 to/from MEL for a short while.

I've received the dreaded "warning shot" email from the very prolific Mr Switzky advising me that I currently stand at 300+ (I won't give the exact figure) status credits and need another 800+ by end November to retain Platinum. He's going to kindly give me 25 status credits next time I fly to help me get there.

As the OP, I'm resurrecting this thread to update. On advice from here, I wrote to QFF 6 or so weeks ago and got a phone call in response saying that it was too early to assess my situation but I'd hear from them about a month out ie end October.

I haven't heard from them but this morning, effectively 2 months in advance, my summary reads:
Current Status: Platinum
Status reassessment will occur: 30 Nov 2008
Status credits earned from 01 Dec 2006: 500+
Additional Status credits required by 30 Nov 2007 to receive
complimentary 'Partner Gold' membership: 1500+

As the reassessment date has changed, my status hasn't and they are no longer telling me how many points I need to retain WP by 30/11/07, I think I can assume I've got the status for another year. :D

My current reservations will take me to 1080 SC's by 30/11 and there are already around 1400 on my booking list for next year.

As I'm not being asked to complete the form of future travel this looks like another variation of approach by QF. Maybe my email helped. Should I be a happy boy yet?

Good Luck, but don't get your hopes up. I emailed my future travel plans, and rang, but to no avail. I am back to gold, with, of course, a nice letter saying that if I increased my travel I would get back to platinum. Nothing like stating the bleeding obvious.

I was asked to fill out the from aswell.

Today I log in and see

Current Status:Platinum Status reassessment will occur:31 Oct 2008

I am a happy camper!

I rang them to confirm. They said yes I requalified. My new card is already in the mail. Should have it next week :)
