I guess the biggie that many of us have had experience with, is the Priority Privilege call centre con job, but I was wondering what other retail rip-offs people endure.

For me, the latest was yesterday. Driving home at lunch time, I thought I'd quickly drop into a Muck-and-Chuck burger shop to grab a quick bite. I haven't been near a McDonalds for ages so whilst surveying the menu board, I was somewhat horrified to see a medium Big Mac meal deal was $9.15 . Anyway, I continued to study the menu and I noticed they're currently advertising an All Day Meal Deal with one choice being a Big Mac medium meal for $5. I asked the young lady behind the counter what the difference was and she replied "nothing, they are both the same", so I said I'd have the $5 deal. While she was completing the sale, I asked her what she would have charged if I just asked for a Big Mac medium meal and she stated "oh we have to charge you for the dearer one unless you ask for the $5 deal"..............What a con job. Almost double the price. I thought if a company offered a sale price on a product or service, it was bound to honour that offer. Obviously, not.

I guess its much the same as ordering a big mac, med fried and a med coke ... unless you ask for the 'meal deal' it will cost you more. I think I fell into this recently when I went to Maccas with a couple of friends who eat like pigeons ... one wanted a large fries, one wanted a cheeseburger, blah blah - no drinks, ****e, cost a fortune compared to just ordering 3 meal deals.

Why would you want to irritate your customers?
Well I guess they don't think they will irritate many. The intelligent ones will be intelligent enough to ask for the deal and those not smart enough won't know they have missed out.

The Golden Arches does live up to its marketing hype with that offer but you have to specifically ask for that all Day meal not the usual one.

It's unethical but legal.

In the same way a plumber charged me for the 15 minutes he spent writing up his invoice for a 10 minute job which took his time past the 15 minute call out time. As I hadn't specifically asked the plumber if I'd be charged for writing out his invoice then the Consumer affairs said it was unethical but not illegal.

I say their name every chance I get. Metropolitan Plumbing in Adelaide.

When with a mate or 2 at KFC, we each chip in $10-15 and get one of those family meals.

A bit like a stupidity tax?

A bit, yes. Frankly there are many, many things in life where if you ask the right questions you can get things cheaper, this whole site is a testament to that for travel. But with a bit more searching you can find deals on many things!
