Replacement for platinum charge card?

Hi,

Do you guys transfer to QFF because of the earn rates or burn rates? Or because of the ability to book ASA's?

Thanks,
K.

  • there are many CC products that allow QF redemption so its easy for me to maximise earn with QF (1.5 Amex, 1.25 Visa)
  • I love ASA awards for earning status as I can't afford to self-fund in premium cabins, and work doesn't send me around the world
  • I can easily earn QF points from other activity - eg Everyday rewards, Optus, Restaurants, Hotels etc
  • I like the integrated OneWorld network as compared to the hodge podge that is Virgin international

greenfrog86 has nailed it for me with those four points.*

*err actually work does send me around the world.

2 Altitude points = 1 mile for DJ,SQ,MH,CX

If the above is the conversion rate for Westpac Amex Altitude points, I don't understand why you'd use that over a Select card.
If 2 altitude pts = 1 SQ/CX etc mile, and you get 1.5 pts per $, then that's only 0.75 SQ/CX etc miles per $.
On Select you get 1.33 SQ miles per $.

Can someone please correct me if this is wrong?

EDIT: My bad - I now see that the Amex Altitude card earns 3 pts/$, thus 1.5 SQ/CX points/$ earned.

The problem I see with having both a Citi Select for Visa and a Westpac Platinum for Amex is the additional cost of the Westpac card for the points gained. You only get .1666 points more with the Amex than on the Select, so on an annual spend of $100,000, and assuming it could all go on the Amex, that's only an additional 16,667 points - for an annual fee of $295. For me 16,667 points aren't worth $295 in any program.

I'm actually completely stuck at the moment, as I suspect I am one of very few who uses VS Flying Club, so AmEx is the only partner in Australia. No option at all.

Rang Amex plat regarding a card query and mentioned again that the 1 oct change will not suit us as most of our spend will become 1 for 1. I mentioned we now had an ANZ Amex card and he would be able to see our spend had dropped. He said yes our spend was down and could also see the 3 to 1 and 2 for 1 points would not work for us. I said all we want is 1.5 points per dollar to Qantas. He said the Amex ultimate card was coming back with 1.5 to Qantas but I would have to keep checking the website as he couldn't say more. I asked will it be this year or next and he said he really couldn't say.

With the possibility of staying with Amex using ultimate at 1.5 points I still want my cake and to eat it too, so I'm wondering how their travel insurance works? as the platinum coverage for our family using rewards points bookings was another key benefit I will miss leaving platinum.

and here's another for Velocity points. With the combined Diners/MC you get 3ppd on Diners and 1.25 ppd on the mastercard :

BIG note and reminder to myself. To find their transfer partners go to their "online catalogue" section. Pick redeem for travel and pick the 1-5,000 points range. It took me ages to find this, and then I keep forgetting how to do it. I've said it before and I'll say it again. The web site is a dog's breakfast
Velocity Frequent Flyer Transfer - You must be a member of the airline's Reward Program to redeem Diners Club Reward points for points in that airline's program. Membership of the airline's Reward Program is subject to their Rules and Terms and Conditions. Your redemption must be in blocks of 5,000 Diners Club Reward points. Diners Club Reward Points may only be redeemed for the airline's Reward Program points by a Primary Cardholder and credited to their airline Reward Program account. It may take up to 28 days for points to appear in the Primary Cardholder's airline Reward Program account. Points once redeemed cannot be reversed. 1 Diners Club Reward points = 1 Airline point.

this bit seems to have disappeared in the web site update. The web site indicates a new direct to Qantas earn card soon.

As it stands the Citibank business gold visa gives me 1.25 points per $ spend. The HSBC card gives me 2 points per $ on my overseas spend.

I can't see the other Citibank cards giving me a better earn for QF. Am I missing something? (Given that I frequently do!!)

Why not go for the Citibank Select. You get 2 points per $ spent locally and 5 points per dollar spent internationally.

Yes they are Citipoints, but with their Qantas Frequent Flyter Price Match (where they match whatever points are required for a Qantas FF flight for your Citipoints in a 1:1 fashion). A pretty awesome deal for a quicker and higher point earn.

But the only caveat is as long as Citi keep the Qantas FF Price Match offer going.

I cancelled mine today. after 26 years. no real attempt made to hold onto me as a client

Such a shame for Amex to throw away all those years of goodwill.

Yes, indeed. I've said in the other thread that I think this is a deliberate strategy to move willing customers off Ascent/Premium and into other products, but on reflection, you'd imagine as part of the strategy they would try pretty hard to not bleed customers from the Amex world, instead, try to keep them in the fold with "new and exciting" products more aligned with Amex's current direction (whatever that might be).
