Reduced AMEX earn rates from April 2019

Hi folks,

Looking for advice on best thing to do with AMEX Explorer points before the change. Have about 160k of them, also have about 350k Velocity points and have Qantas FF with a low balance.

Don't travel as much as I used to anymore and based in Perth. Travel to Dublin a bit but Etihad no longer fly from Perth so Virgin options limited for Intl travel.

Open to thoughts, suggestions etc. Should I just consolidate in Virgin who seem to be easier to redeem with than Qantas.

Thanks in advance,

everyone, big advice to transfer your points out before devaluation,
plus any purhcases take a day or two to process, plus its better to be safe to transfer a few days early just in case

Just bought another 5K worth of WOW Wish GCs at 5% off with my Edge before the big devaluation! Planning to TF everything out a week prior but will leave 5K + last minute pts to be TFd on 14.4.

Hmm, wonder if I can convince the RBA to sell some banknotes :)

Not that one would ever do this.... but say one were to spend about $30k on something refundable before 15 April, transfer the points out, and then process a refund, would one expect their balance to go into negative? Or can't the Amex system go below 0?

I ran up more than 500,000 points on Platinum Edge so I picked up a lovely transfer bonus to Velocity last month. Velocity points are great for domestic A330 for us in business class.
I may be a Woolies gift card fiend.

It does go to negative. But you can cancel your card owing them points, I believe.

Well a spanner in the works.Had fraudulent expenses on my Amex a month before old card expired.transaction on line and they knew my billing address so card not skimmed at restaurant etc.On FT several that had used cards online with SPG reported cards used about a month before expiry so I am presuming this is the case with my card. However now card has been partially blocked so that I can use it in person but not online-hadn't ever heard this way of doing it but told this by the fraud unit.Suggested I will be able to go back online by 15th.Cutting it fine for transfer to SQ.

The 15th will be too late, I think 14th is the last day. Do you not have access to your online account or is it only that your card doesn’t work online?
If you can’t transfer points out then it would be a pretty good case for getting a doubling of points offer!

better to be safe than sorry I just can't imagine Amex staff being nice and fixing the issue for you also seems like a lot of work for them too

Well funnily enough I just had a 500k+ missing points claim rectified as of today so you never know...

Any transactions over the weekend of 12-13-14 normally clears 11am Monday morning.

Last day for any payments would be 11th, clearing on 12th 11am. Anything spent after would be the new rate?

The $ transfers and point allocation are a bit sluggish (or maybe it's because I am waiting *patiently* for them all to clear...). Normally $ clears within 12 hours but it's over 24 hours and the $ still has not credited to my account. Also, transaction have posted (not pending) and the points have not.
I am glad I decided to organise it all this week instead of next week.
