Red e-Deal - Cancellation/Credit and Re-Use - Newbie Question

Total newbie question here but I'd rather ask the experts than make a rookie mistake!

I need to cancel a Red e-Deal domestic fare that I booked on-line.

Am I correct in reading the Fare Rules that I can

Cancel the ticket
Use the full amount towards another ticket later on
& There are NO costs/surcharges involved ?

3 $65 fee per booking per person! for the next booking and any fare difference..

Yes I have read it but it's not quite clear......

  • Ticket value can be used towards payment for a new booking for travel anywhere on the Qantas network within 12 months of the date that the original ticket was issued. However, you cannot re-book and travel on the same day.
  • Any credit is the Australian dollar price

Then it says a "Cancellation" $ Keep Value

My read of it is that the $65 only applies if you want to change the flight, not cancel and re-book..........

For Red e-deals, the conditions are poor...
Yes "cancellation" keeps "value" but you will be pinged the $65 per person per booking when you rebook plus any fare difference

Back in the early days of 'red e-deals' the fare were not changeable at all - fail to travel as booked and you'd forfeit the entire fare.

While there is indeed no direct mention of a fee for reusing the credit 'shell' if cancelling - refer to the "see 'Booking Changes' above" part:

I looked into doing this the other day! I had booked a Q class BNE-MEL @ $179, but the same flight is now on sale in E class for $119... I looked at cancelling the Q and purchasing the E with part of the credit, but the $65 cancellation fee would indeed apply when you go to rebook (I decided against it, as it would actually cost money... If I'd paid much more for the flight (or if the cancellation fee was lower), I would have saved some money haha!

Afraid not - you have overlooked the condition "new fare must be equal or greater value". There is no way to get a "partial refund" as it were - only to pay more money.

Ahh... well in the same situation with a higher original fare, I could always put the fare into credit and purchase a new ticket at the lower price (with cash/CC - not using the credit), and save the credit for a more expensive flight

And as highlighted sometimes it is not worth changing flights but rather cancelling and rebooking.

I can confirm the $65 charge for re-booking with a voucher from a cancelled red E-deal; I just got hit with this, despite the fact that the new fare was in J.
