Recent Experiences with Qantas' terminal transfer at SYD

At MEL, check in, you show your passport to the QFd staff, go to T1 to get the flight to SYD, dont go to T2.
With the BP for both sectors, ie, the MEL -> SYD and SYD -> NAN, you do not need to go and see any staff at T1 in SYD.
QFd plane lands, try to be the first few out, try to sit up ahead, as soon as J pax get off, you run, get to gate 15, wait a bit, scan BP for the bus to T1, go up the escalators, run more like it, go through int sec screening, and then outgoing immi.
With a linked PNR, MEL QFd staff should be able to issue a BP for both sectors.
---
QF101, was late, because the operating aircraft is the QF140, from AKL, so if that flight incoming is late, then the flight out to NAN is late.
Flight aware "track incoming plane" gives a clue which route that particular plane has flown.
They (QF) really make their planes work very hard.

What’s the cutoff for bag drop at the Sydney International-to-Domestic transfer (before you get on the bus)?

I don’t believe there’s a hard and fast rule, it’s up to the discretion of the agent.

Really as long as your flight hasn’t started boarding you’ll probably make it. It’s a lot quicker in that direction.

No hard cutoff but i don't think anything is making it onto the plane if its any less than 45mins. Actually you'd struggle to make it on in time unless they hold.

But they'll tell you at the bag drop and might even rebook you onto next plane if its that tight.

It's 45 minutes.

Found out the hard way and confirmed by staff last week!

Arrived at Sydney International Transfer at T-40mins due to late inbound and the system had already "closed" the flight. The supervisor tried calling someone to have it re-opened, was told "absolutely no way" and our party was instead given 2 hotel rooms for 2 nights until the next flight out.

Are you talking I>D? Where in earth were you going that involved a 48 hour delay?

I'm flying BNE-SYD-HNL in November. I was landing 18:20 in SYD for a 20:10 departure out of international. I just got a flight change from Qantas, now arriving at 20:05 in SYD for 20:10 departure LOL Are they using AI for flight re-scheduling now?

Yes I>D. Onward to BXG on QLINK - the route is not daily at the moment hence the extended delay. Whilst the staff at international transfer did try to get us through, none of us needed to be back in a hurry so it wasn't a bother.

That’s crazy. I would have thought they’d rebook you to MEL and put you in a taxi, would have been cheaper than two nights in a hotel.

I suspect you were fishing for a free holiday 😏. I don’t think many people would have accepted this resolution.

Hi @justinbrett

Do you know if there is an exception to the 90min D-I at SYD for:

28 October
QF588, HBA-SYD, 0605-0805

On to
QF63, SYD-JNB, leaving at 0930

The HBA to SYD was just retimed from 0755 to 0805 taking it under 90mins

(Same ticket, in J)

No there’s not.

There’s only one inbound domestic flight that gets a blanket reduction - QF730 from ADL.

The only outbound international flights that get a reduction are a handful of 737 routes, and of course JNB is a widebody.

Hmmm annoying, thanks for the info though. They sent the updated ticket with new times but didn't 'reissue' the ticket as the date is still the same as when originally purchased.

Wondering whether I open the can of worms which means going up the night before (with 2 kids in tow).

Does anyone know if check in is an issue if under MCT even though a 'valid' ticket?

Uber is about $200 from MEL to Bendigo, I imagine that wouldn't even cover meals for 2 pax for 2 days, let alone accommodation.
We did ask if we could reroute to MEL and they were happy to do it but told us we would be on our own for any ground transport, which I thought was crazy considering we’d save them heaps of cash.

Funnily enough I also had a BXG-SYD flight last week that was cancelled due to fog and the irony was not lost on me when they bussed everyone to MEL instead!

Wonder what the chances would be of successfully claiming for missing SC now that your routing was BXG-MEL-SYD? 😜

If you do not make that first flight from HBA -> SYD, that flight to JNB will be cancelled, as a no show.
If you had done a separate booking, earlier on, unlinked PNR, then its ok.
But with a linked PNR, you cant miss any begining sectors, it all has to follow the linkage, sad to say.
---
You will need to be at HBA airport very early, to do bag drop, and show passport to be swiped into their keyboard, so you do not need to do this at T1 in SYD.
At T1, as the D -> I bus drops you off, you just go through to outgoing int sec screening, and smartgate outgoing passport via the staffed gate.
===
If for some reason your HBA -> SYD flight is cancelled, by QF, then its up to them to deal with it.
===
Best not to leap frog it, ie, make your "own way up" to SYD, and not follow the line of the booking.

Wasn't planning on making my own way, was going to point out to them the ticket doesnt meet MCT and get them to put us on a flight the night before

Might (probably) work with a higher probability, if you contact them prior, not just turn up at the airport the day before and ask, which might or might not work.
Usually, when they change things, they would email you with options, either to accept the changes, or cancel the booking, ... when you get the email, or if you have already received the email, contact the call centre/centrer asap.
