Reasons to be cheerful in LHR

Ha ha (shouldn't laugh - I could be in that in 2 months) - it looks like it stretches from T1 to T4 and back again....

What the hell. You would think they would either open up some more screening lanes, or put some new ones in.

I think what's most disturbing is that they have those rope barriers all the way to the end. It's not like it was unexpected, they planned for this.

Is that T3 (security line looks familiar plus I saw the VS employee waling by) ?

Any chance of sneaking in somewhere at the front of that queue?

I am glad I only have 4 transits at LHR in August/September.

I hope you avoid any work stoppage troubles that seem to beseige LHR every August.

If I could avoid the place I would. That is the problem of booking a Oneworld RTW award late.

I am looking ahead to next year and do no see much award availability released by MA. Looks like LHR will remain the main Oneworld hub.

The most surprising aspect of that for me is that the people in the queue don't even look surprised, annoyed, irate, homicidal, or even mildly irritated - they look totally worn down, like they expect or deserve nothing different, or better.... Very Sad....

Can you imagine what pax in a similar queue would look like if it were forced on us here in OZ

The SWAT coppers would probably have to be called...

The moral of this story is, connect via a Continental port to LCY, and avoid all this madness.

I/we have been doing this for some time now, and can happily say that LHR not at all missed! Yes, it takes a little longer, but it's worth it.

Looks like it to me.

I was there in mid-December and the security line was thicker than that - must have been 10 abreast. I was planning on doing the right thing to get to the fast-track, i.e. go to the end of the regular line, cross over and come back. Well after walking about 30 metres and still not being able to see the end, I crossed the barrier, apologised to all and sundry, and crossed over to the very short fast-track. It must have taken literally hours in the regular line to get through security. Without fast-track I would definitely have missed my flight.

The day I was there had no industrial problems, no weather problems, and it wasn't a long weekend or anything. Just a regular Sunday as far as I could tell.

My experience at LHR this week was not an issue. It took me less than a minute to clear passport control (using my Aussie passport) at T4 arrivals, no waiting for check-in for my departing flight from T1 (using R check-in area), and less than a minute to clear security into T1. And there was no issue with my QF Platinum card getting me access to the JW Blue lounge :D .

It does look a little familiar. I flew out on the 2nd of Jan and recognise the building. I think I must have been very lucky in general though, I turned up 1hr55mins before the flight, walked straight to the front of the line for Y with no status, got 18kgs of excess baggage checked with no cost, went upstairs and briefly noticed the lines, had a coffee at Starbucks, walked to the now non-existent lines, straight through passport control and security without any extra checks, into Duty Free and was at the boarding gate 1hr before the flight. All this at 7.30 at night. I only have fond memories of Heathrow. ;)

Have feeling this may have been beginners luck. :p

I'm not sure about luck. I think this must have been an aberration for one reason or another. Having been through LHR and T3 5-6 times during the first 4 months of this year, I have NEVER seen a line like that, and I have been through on Mon/Wed/Thu/Fri/Sat. Then again I could have been lucky too

Despite the (justified) grumblings about LHR, I did post on FT that I had a T3-T1 connection (landside) which was 25mins from a/c door to lounge entry, and T1-T3 are a standard 30-35 mins for me. IRIS helps.

I'm lucky to have never connected at LHR - always O/D. But that'd soon change given new APD...

OTOH I did a LGW-LHR once. The TA was too dim to book me on the BA codeshare on EI into LHR and I ended up flying BA DUB-LGW to connect to LHR-HKG with a 7hr layover. Turned out that the M25 was down because of an accident and the bus transfer took 3 hrs instead of the usual 90 mins... Not an experience I'd voluntarily repeat!

I remember a queue just like that on 14/09/01 at T3 - luckily we were on Royal Brunei and in J, so the queue was not for us!

I also agree about T1 for BA - The R zone was a breeze!:D

Yes, after September 11 that's no big suprise really. Imagine what it would have been like after the liquids and no hand luggage threat last July.

I was flying into and out of LHR right in the middle of that little fun time.

The best thing was being a premium customer and getting a little assistence in getting through lines.
The queue's were massive and most people were getting the 5th degree on every part of their carry on.

The good part of it was there no problem getting room for carryon luggage.
