Interesting article, but you missed THE most important thing......

IMO they treat their members/customers with the respect they deserve.

Just try booking a reward flight with QF or VA and getting them to hold the seat til you get your points across.
When SQ or KF say they will call you back...........they actually do!
I know some have had issues with their call centers but my experiences have been superb.

With apologies to Platinum members of both, the latest stunts of QF and VA of waiting til a few days before departure to find out if your upgrade bid/application has been successful is insulting.Especially to LAX.

VA not releasing J reward seats til 7-10 days before departure is similar. Why even bother being a member?

Keith at Point Hacks is spot on........just use them for domestic upgrades and use Asia Miles and the (always improving) Star Alliance network.

There are many reasons to fly SQ, which is why I do it quite a lot: unfortunately the Krisflyer scheme is most decidedly NOT one of them; frankly, for actual "frequent flyers", it is a crock.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Depends on what you use, want or need from a FF scheme. Each scheme has its pros and cons. In the star alliance world it’s not that bad but also not a leader.

They could do more to recognise “bread and butter” high fare Y pax. I am sure a passenger travelling between SIN and CGK for $1k in economy is just as- or more - profitable (% wise) compared to a biz pax travelling between SIN and Europe for $5-6k return.

Seeing I can transfer my Flybuys points indirectly to KF and my Amex points directly I really like KF.Apart from some increases in surcharges these points have cost me nothing. But even without any status I have been able to snag 3 x F awards to LAX for the 2 of us from SIN but next year 2 suites awards to LHR.
Try doing that with QFF without any status.

SQ wouldn't let me use points to upgrade PE to J from LHR last time as I didn't have SQ status. I fly them a lot but use VA for all accruals. J was half empty and it was hours prior to flying. Shame...... but not ideal.

KF may well be a great "frequent buyer" scheme (to use a term often aimed at QF) but as a "frequent flyer" scheme it is pretty mean.

Yes, doubtless it is easier to get award seats on SQ, but that is just down to arithmetic: they have a lot more seats overall available on most routes.

Though on SIN-LAX it is only 4 F seats a day and so far have always been able to get 2.The cabin has never been full.Once just us,twice 1 other pax.
Though I do book on release of the seats.

As KF points disappear after 3 years can you keep them active by buying something via their site? Does one transaction start the 3 years again?

No, they expire. Only three ways of keeping them active :
1) paying (in points or $$) to extend their life for another 6 months (or 12 months if you hold KF silver or gold)
2) become a PPS member (in which they will only expire 3 years after you cease being a PPS member), or
3) transfer them to Velocity and use them there (at 1.35:1 the penalty is greater than 1) above)

If I transferred say 300,000 points to kf two years ago and then book a ticket today but only use 200,000 points, will the remaining points still expire in one year?

So best to keep them in your velocity account until you need to use them>?
That is one possible solution, yes, to "extend" the "lifetime" of your miles.
Be prepared for a massive hit to your VA balance though, as the transfer from VA to SQ/KF is now 1.55:1. As a reference, 155,000 VA points will turn into 100,000 KF miles. That's quite a big hit.

It depends on what you mean by 'hit'. I think it's misguided to assume that one point in VA is worth one point in SQ is worth one point in QF is worth one point in BA... No more than you'd talk about the 'hit' in receiving less than 1 US dollar for your 1 Australian dollar, or less than 1 Australian dollar for your 1 NZ dollar.

If you hold Velocity and are looking to do a redemption through KrisFlyer, then you look at the price in KF points, multiply by 1.55 and that's your price in Velocity. Then just ask yourself whether it is good value or whether you could get better value using your Velocity points some other way.

Another factor to consider is the amount of Devaluations SQ makes towards VA & *A partners.

While award redemption charts & other conditions get tweaked every year, changing to a VA-SQ 1.55 transfer rate As Well as points redemption increases hit me big time.

If you fly more with VA & just want a plum SQ redemption, hold them in Velocity.
If you definitely plan to use the points well within 3 years, collect SQ.
