I am a bit confused regarding the information I see here

http://www.qantas.com.au/info/flying/qantasClub/changes/loungeAccess

In particular, there seems to be a bit of a disconnect in the access policy when considering under 'qantas' rules and 'oneworld' rules.

From a strict reading of the table, I think that....

For a QFF Gold, traveling on QF international flight. They can access Qantas Club and any partner lounge (first table)

but if they are traveling on a partner flight (eg. CX), they can only access partner lounges (second table)

Isn't it a bit weird that being a mid level FFP member, that the access in the 'home' lounges is a bit worse than in foreign lounges.

OneWorld Sapphire status entitles the QF Gold FF to use any OneWorld lounge when departing on any OneWorld marketed and operated flight.

So in your example, if travelling on a CX flight (CX code and metal) you can use any OneWorld lounge at that airport for which you have security access (i.e. in the same terminal as your flight).

However, note that some lounges that may first appear to be a OneWorld lounge may not be so. For example, the lounge used by BA at CDG is not a OneWorld lounge. In that case, it cannot not used by a QF Gold member unless travelling in business class on a BA flight number. So if travelling on a QF codeshare there is no access (even for business class passengers).

NM once again you have imparted knowledge that I was unaware. I did use the CDG BA lounge on a BA flight number, had not realised that if I had booked as a QF codeshare there was no access. But now you have pointed it out I remember it wasn't their lounge they were utilising someone elses (cant remember whose it was though)

This is one area where *A status lounge access is better than OW in that access would be available in similar circumstances (contract lounge flying on codeshare regardless of class of travel) to *Gold member. However, even *A does make a distinction between contract and other lounges - in terms of access when flying other airlines (that use different lounge or none at the same airport).

Eg at NRT NZ uses contract lounge. *Gold pax flying NZ (regardless of codeshare or class of travel) can use this lounge. However *Gold pax flying other *A airlines from NRT cannot, since those other airlines use different lounges. Contrast this to regular lounges, eg LHR T3. *Gold pax flying any *A airline out of LHR T3 (regardless of codeshare or class of travel) can use any one of the *A lounges available - ie SQ Silver Kris Lounge, SK/AC London Lounge and UA Red Carpet Club.

Hmm. So just considering when travelling internationally. Are there Qantas Club lounges which are not also Oneworld lounges? (that is, is there any lounges which would be accessable to a gold QFF only if flying on QF and not another OW airline?)

Where are they?

There are locations where QF uses lounges which are not their own. At FRA for example QF uses the Delta Crown Club Room ; access is available to Qantas Club members travelling QF but , I believe that a member not travelling QF would not be permitted access

Something interesting I have found, is that BA lounges are very generous with their lounge access policy. For example, I have found that regardless of what OneWorld airline your flight is with, they will grant you access to the BA lounge(provided you are gold or better or have paid QP membership). This is seemingly at odds with the access table on the Qantas website.

My advice: if you don't know, just ask nicely.

If you are Gold or Platinum, you are entitled, based on your OW status, to access ANY OW lounge when flying on a OW carrier, as long as that lounge is accessible to you. (By accessible, I mean that the various security and border control authorities allow you access to the area that the lounge is located in).

Paid QP membership on the other hand should not get you access to a lounge unless your next flight is with the carrier whose lounge you wish to access. So if flying on CX, you won't get lounge access, if flying BA, you will only get BA lounge access, not AA, and so on.

Not always. For example, the BA lounge at MIA is renound for not permitting access to AA Plat and EXP members who are flying on AA flight. Strictly according to the rules, they should be permitted access. But there would be masses of people wanting to do it since AA does not permit access to their one Plat and EXP members without a paid membership or a same-day international departure.

It is also worth noting that the Delta Crown room at FRA only operates as a QF partner lounge for about 3 hours before the QF6 late evening departure. So the window of opportunity for anyone wanting to use that lounge as a OneWorld Sapphire/Emerald and not flying on QF6 that day would be very small. And no, they would still not permit access.

In most cases I use the lounge of the airline I am flying. Main exception being HKG where I generally use the CX lounges. I was very tempted in IAD to visit the BA lounge across the hall, but I was given enough bar vouchers and did not have a long wait so stayed with the AC when making an AA domestic flight.

Although it has been well over a year since I have attempted it, but last time I was at IAD the AC was full to overflowing and I went down to the BA lounge where there was an attempt to reject me. I was eventually let in.

Never had any issues getting into CX - KUL, when flying MAS, with my "Plat".

After being reminded that there is an AC nearby, BA let me in. At the time I was an AA Plat (which would not normally give lounge access on domestic flights), but because my domestic AA flight was connecting to an international QF flight I was allowed in.

For the record, the BA lounge is much nicer than the AC. Hardly a big surprise.

I agree. I once caught the lounge staff helping themselves to the food and drink when I was in the lounge by myself (while waiting for an AA flight). Boy, did they look guilty! Although there is Corona in the AC!
