QFF Inaccessible from Overseas?

Arrived in Hong Kong this and I just used the Qantas mobile app (on my tablet) to change seats and select meal for my flight next week over the hotel wifi and wasnt required to enter a sms code or answer security questions. I believe this is because i used the app on same device in Sydney last week to select my seat, verified by sms whilst in country, and the app recognises im using same device now that im overseas.

So if you dont want hassle, install qantas app and verify whilst in Aus, then can use it over wifi when travelling without issue.

You see the same irresponsible behaviour all too often these days. I suspect it is mainly by people with very limited REAL world experience. Their whole premise is based on the "I know what EVERYONE does", and they base their application around this.

I do a number of online surveys, and you would be amazed at the number of times that you are only offered a number of inappropriate choices without further options. It is obvious that the person setting the questions has based them around their own attitudes/experiences with the expectation they apply to everyone.

Could that be the culprit that open people's QFF accout to scammers?
Hotel's wifi, even its "supposed" to be secure that you need your surname and hotel room number to log into any hotel that provide it's "free wifi".

Ive not had issues, but always switch onto mobile data for banking etc.

It's only Australia / USA/ UK that still uses SMS. The rest of the world has moved on and uses in-app notifications or authenticator apps. Heck, the 'messages/sms' icon on my phone is buried in a folder somewhere. Doesn't even make it to my front page icons.

Qantas could be mindful that when Australians travel outside of Australia, the mobile behaviour is generally different from that of being physically in Aus.

Local sims, e-sims, wifi-only, or no mobile are the norm.
And when a customer is attempting to log-in to Qantas whilst aborad, it's likely for something important (else why would you log in?), and therefore fumbling around with sims, pay through the nose for roaming, broken SMS routing is the last thing the customer needs to deal with.

I use local OS sim while OS.

But Whenever I transact with CC or anyone who require 2FA, I insert the Telstra sim.

Telstra international roaming = $10/day.
Included unlimited calls and SMS. Data 200Mb.

So It costs me $10 which is small change compared to the headache described above. I remove the sim after the transaction.

Perhaps Qantas is taking a cut of roaming fees, and thus mandating SMS ? ;-)

Wifi other than your own home can't be trusted. Always use VPN when connecting to *ANY* other wifi.

So I'm traveling in the US and trying to access QFF to make a booking. When I log in with valid credentials it asks me to repeat a security code sent to an Australian mobile I don't have access to. It then defaults to security questions and says I have wrong answers to questions there can only be one answer to! When I then call QFF in Australia there is a two hour wait. On a call from the US! So I send QFF ' Customer' Service' (a joke name, surely) an online request for assistance and get no reply. Useless, just useless, worthless and an embarrassing pain to have anything to do with, why do we bother with these people.
And being premium with 1400 status credits does not help either, as I found out yesterday when I tried 3 times to contact Qantas after the computer dumped my preferred seating for the third time. So onto skype waited 10 minutes, then 5 minutes and realised that my life is too short to be doing this, so I went onto messenger and the Qantas on line thing, where I waited and waited for a reply, once again after entering my QFF number. I must admit to making a mistake there as when I typed in what I was there ,for the answer came up for me to go to "Manage my booking", which is where the system had dumped my seating, which I had previously called about.
Only one thing left to do "Go to the beer fridge".
After finishing a thirst quencher, or what I call a calming down process, I went back to Skype and only waited 5 minutes, where I was answered and the matter resolved, yes the computer had dumped my seating.
So I don't reckon that being a premium QFF member gets you to the front of the queue.
And of course some Qantas lovers here could say that it is peak holiday season and a lot of staff are on holidays, blah, blah, blah, but the simple fact is that something is not working.

If you think 5 minutes isn’t at the front of the queue, perhaps you should see how long those who are not WP are waiting for to be answered...

Yes, could have something to do with the time of day one calls, I had to call them on something this morning, so onto Skype and a very quick response at 7 a.m. Sydney time.

I live overseas and I always have issues receiving texts on my australian telstra phone (eg. mastercard 3d secure, nab (was locked out of internet banking for 9 months there until I landed back in aus), mygov and qantas). Even though the phone works perfectly while in australia, it does not receive texts in time outside of australia (i get quite a few verification texts either coming through an hour late or not at all).
My Qantas account was set up 20 years ago and I have no clue as to the verification questions (I have tried everything but only from overseas - I will try with a vpn as someone suggested above (I also could not book anything on jetstar from overseas (a month ago) and their chat does not come up, but these are other issues)).

In june/july I could no longer log into my qff account (the app still worked but I wanted to check reward seats). I messaged on facebook (who are really nice but could not help) and emailed them (who always take weeks to reply, if at all) about the problem. A few weeks later I noticed I had the option to verify with email which I used a few times. But then I returned to australia for christmas and this option seemingly disappeared... I am not sure if anyone else has been given the option to verify via email but this solved all my problems (until it disappeared again). I have emailed qff again (over a week ago) so i expect access to my account in a few weeks hopefully!

I am not sure if the email verification option was just temporary or if it was a trial etc. but I loved it and I really hope they change it permanently to that (that or generate a code in the qff app). All this extra security is too much, but if they need it for insurance etc. then at least they should make sure it works.

Had you logged into your QFF account whilst in Australia using your mobile to receive the sms, you could have changed your security questions and answers online (and taken note) and you could have also added your foreign mobile number for sms going forward.

Curious, what email address did you use for Qantas?

If you live overseas, why don't you just have the texts sent to your local number?
