Whole family of 5 to Paris to do Eurodisney

650k points for economy

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Interesting getting an email from QF to win a share of 1 million QFF points. But the fine print is what caught my eye-

There are five (5) prizes of 200,000 Qantas Points each.
The maximum notional value of each prize is AU$1,400, with a total prize pool of AU$7,000

So to QFF a point is worth a maximum of 0.7 cents.

So, if we already have the points and QF comes back and says, "Points Destination Reached", am in the comp to get more or not??

So, it would seem that I have to use my points before I can win 200K more points.

So, ultimately, this promo is just a bit of cheese to get the QFF membership list to spend more with partners, to keep QFF attractive to the partners, so QFF can keep selling points to the partners, which is the name of the QFF game these days.

A million points costs QFF absolutely nothing, devalues the points already in circulation and there is b..... all chance of you being able to redeem the points on the flight you want, in the class you want, for the number of people you want.

Bah, humbug.

Re: Qantas 1,000.000 points "Points Destination" competition.

Can anyone make head or tail of this "promotion".

Nope. Just a promo to get you to buy more very expensive toasters with points... Hey I wonder if anyone has requested a toaster instead of flights?

Yep, that's it. I noticed the bit about even if you won, there may not be any seats available for your prize, so that means that you actually lost, not won.

So to QFF a point is worth a maximum of 0.7 cents.

My guess is they value it versus there lowest fare available.

For example 200,000 points will get MEL-SYD in lowest fare Economy plus $33 each way 25 times.....

Best sale fare I have seen for QF is $89 one way, so $89 less $33 = $56, which just happens to equal $1400 when multiplied by 25!!!!!

You wouldn't find the reward seats available for that many :p

Yes found 5 seats return but was 720k points plus taxes, which I do not have.....hence the wish list!

QF/EK then CX/QF on return

The 'maximum notional value' of the 1,000,000 points caught my eye too. According to the terms and conditions this was calculated based on a 'sample of the of the QFF reward options... that could be obtained by redeeming the prize.' The example given in the T&Cs:

'3,500 Qantas Points could be redeemed for a David Jones Store eGift Card with a value of AU$25 and 997,500 Qantas Points could be redeemed for David Jones Store eGift Cards to the value ofAU$7,000.'

My reading of the T&Cs seems to indicate that it doesn't matter whether one has sufficient points for their 'points destination' or not. Eligible entrants (QFF members) receive an entry when registering their points destination, and subsequent ones when earning QFF points with partner programs. There is nothing to indicate that the number of points the winner receives is calculated contra to the number of points you already have to achieving your 'destination'; the prize simply is 200,000. This promotion would appear a way for QFF to accumulate more information about their members, one could imagine to personalise emails regarding reaching your goal sooner etc. This sort of 'personalised' marketing is relatively easy to maintain, and arguably has been shown to spur loyalty through reminding members of the potential reward of their loyalty. It is an attempt to realise the abstract notion of a possible future reward through nominating a goal that one will--I imagine--constantly be reminded of, regardless of how very abstract that future reward may be!

And as someone has already pointed out, 1,000,000 points is nothing for QF to spend for additional marketing information.

If it's an information gathering exercise it will gather a lot of mis-information.
I already have the points for my real points goal, so of course I just made one up.
A process like this doesn't yield reliable data.

A fair point, but no doubt it could yield some useable data, enough to justify the maximum notional cost of QFF of $7,000*? I suspect so! Importantly, I would hesitate to argue that the promotion is not explicitly targeted at high-status pax, but rather at some of the other (claimed) 10,000,000** members that QFF has. Solely for the point of debate, if we take a lowly occasional leisure traveller, signed up via the WOW card, this sort of data might be quite useful to help QFF extract some degree of loyalty by reminding them of their 'dream destination'.

Of course, as with apparently all QFF promotions, this one could probably have been targeted (and explained) a little better!

*Actual cost to QFF: <$0
**I'm somewhat hesitant to agree with these figures!
