QFF Award CX flight confirmed and then wait listed, what are my next steps?

Don’t bother with emailing, just call daily and complain that they requested reinstatement and it’s still not reinstated

Update: SYD > HKG via CX now confirmed. Didn't receive any communication, just refreshed my booking reference daily. Went on to CX to selected seats.

Edit: Status on CX now changed from "Confirmed" to "Waitlist confirmed - Issue ticket to secure your flight". QF shows status as confirmed. Checked RJ, shows as trip confirmed with the segment in question as "Confirmed from waitlist". I requested itinerary from CX, shows RESA as OK with my seat selection. Should I call QF tomorrow to confirm? @bellroy26 did you have to do anything for the status to change?

Hi community,

This is my first post but I see the community here is super helpful and I’m hoping someone may help.

I was excited to hear the announcement by Qantas that they’d release thousands of rewards seats on the 24th Feb at 11am. With a family trip planned to Europe I logged in at 10.55 and despite the website crashing tens of times I finally found three business class redemption tickets from Sydney to London with Cathay, all was well (or so I thought).

When I checked the app, the flights showed as “waitlisted”, which is weird that Qantas would take my taxes, my points and my trust and deliver a false promise. Over the last two+ weeks I’ve called Qantas nine times, I’ve been promised calls back (none), have been told it’s resolved (it wasn’t) and other times have been told that I’m wrong and the tickets are issued. I’ve emailed the Qantas ticketing escalations team 4 times and no reply.

I’ve called Cathay customer care team too and they have also confirmed the flight isn’t ticketed and this is Qantas’s responsibility (which they’ve denied).

We now have a total of 9 other flights in Europe booked plus a hotel, car hire and Airbnb totalling more than $35,000; with no certainty of a ticket to get there.

All I’m looking for is the certainty of what I’ve booked and for someone to take ownership of the issue, it seems nobody wants to help and I just don’t know what to do anymore.

Can anyone help (please)?

Hey @MattinSydney, welcome!

Sorry to hear you're experiencing the same problem as the rest of us. Most of here have reached out to Qantas either on the 13 13 13 number or the Customer Care number 1300 659 161 and explained our situation. All of us have had to call a number of times due to the incompetence of the agents, but keep persisting and explaining your situation.

As you've experienced, the agents will tell you your ticket is confirmed, but tell them to look into the current status of the ticket and look deeper. Cathay won't be able to assist as they are not the ticket issuer and only Qantas can assist. For the majority of us, Qantas have requested Cathay to re-instate our tickets, this does take 1-2 weeks but it looks like a couple of us have had success with this. After you've requested this, keep calling back every couple of days and ask for an update.

My reinstatement request was sent off for me on the 25th Feb and only today has my "Waitlist" status has updated to "Waitlist Confirmed - Issue ticket to secure seat", but based on another member's experience this will update to "Confirmed" by tomorrow hopefully.

The plus side is everyone here has been posting their updates and it looks like there is some hope!

Sorry to hear that you’ve had the same experience. It’s not fun.

At least your tickets are still showing in the app. Mine has completely disappeared! But when speaking to QF yesterday they confirmed that I still have a valid ticket! They said they just need to wait for CX to come back to them … just a waiting game 😳

In my case I called Cathay to check if they can do anything on their side. They put me on hold for a few minutes then they told me to call Qantas to sort it out but weirdly enough, right after the call finished I looked at my booking and the Waitlist Confirmed status changed to Confirmed so I didn't bother calling Qantas. I emailed another itinerary from Cathay's website and by that time I got a new eticket number showing RESA "OK" on both legs.

Hey @MattinSydney welcome, and sorry to hear that.

I was in a similar situation as you. Everything was smooth until 24th of Feb when Cathay cancelled one of our legs. We called Qantas to ask for a replacement flight so they booked us to another Cathay flight. I thought all was well until I checked it on my Cathay app where it was showing Waitlisted.

We had it finally confirmed a few days ago after daily calls to the Qantas call centre. Most of the agents didn't really know what to do. Thankfully, on our last attempt, somehow the call went to someone in Qantas Premium, and she explained to us in full details what needs to be done. Obviously, it's all for Qantas to do. She mentioned they have to send an email to Cathay to confirm the waitlist so she looked at the history of my booking and assured me that if it hasn't been done then she will definitely do it that day. She put us on hold and talked to her senior consultant and then assured us that they will send an email to Cathay and then gives us options on what to do in case Cathay will not honor the request, including alternative flights and promised to call me back if this happens, so I felt confident then.

Our waitlisted flight got confirmed the next day.

Also, Qantas gave us a special number to call aside from the usual 13 13 13 and whenever I call that number, I didn't have to wait very long for someone to pick up (max. 15 minutes). I can pm you the number if you like.

No updates since my update from yesterday, they said it should be confirmed by Cathay within the next week. I wasn't hopeful at first but seeing how a few people here have had theirs sorted without any comms, I'm hoping it will come through. Otherwise, I will just cancel the whole trip altoget

Hi @bellroy26 if you wouldn't mind sharing that number with me, i'd be ever so appreciative :)

Update: Ticket is still showing as "Waitlist Confirmed - Issue ticket to secure seat". I called Qantas using @bellroy26's number, thanks for sharing, the wait time was very short. But the person on the other side said they cannot issue the ticket as I'm still on the waitlist, even though I explained the status is "Waitlist Confirmed" and I can already select my seats. They said "No, I'm still on the waitlist" and they've sent another request to reinstate the seat.

Sigh.

Sucks to hear that they haven't fixed it gojun, but happy to hear you didn't have to wait that long.

Now what I did was a bit different. I called Cathay and have them look it up on their side and see if they could do something about it. They did put me on hold to pull my booking up but in the end they said they couldn't help me and that I should call Qantas. For some reason tho, exactly after that call I checked my booking again and it changed from Waitlist Confirmed to Confirmed. Hence I did not bother to call Qantas after that.

I suggest you can try this although there's no guarantee.

Update: TLDR - I called @bellroy26's number again and I got an agent who was more helpful and knew what he was doing. He has been able to update the status to confirmed. I guess the HUACA actually worked, ha!

Before I called QF back, I called Cathay to find out what was actually happening. Cathay said they've already notified Qantas the flight is to be reinstated and to be confirmed. She said Qantas needs to update the status on their end to confirmed. She also advised the seat isn't confirmed until Qantas update the status on their end, despite being able to select seats.

I called the QF number again, I got an agent who was able to update the status on the spot. The e-ticket 081 number was the same as my original one. While I was with him on the phone, I refreshed my flight booking on the CX website and the "Waitlist Confirmed - issue ticket to secure seat' status was gone! It looks once you get to the "Waitlist Confirmed" step, Qantas needs to be prompted to update the status on their end.

Thanks again to @bellroy26 and everyone else who has constantly come back to this thread to keep everyone updated.

I wasn't able to check on CMT, it says the booking isn't in my name??, but I've checked on RJ and shows "confirmed" now!

Thanks, that’s amazingly helpful and supportive and yes if you can PM me anything that would be so good. If I sold something I had no rights to sell, police would be at my door but Qantas seem immune. I’ve called them so many times and every time I think I’m out through to Fiji, I’m always polite but it’s painful as they don’t have a clue. We are desperate to get a resolution 👍

Thanks so much for this, I really hope it gets sorted. Finding rewards seats has been nearly impossible for months as a Bronze status despite massive points earnings. I feel like I’m being taken advantage of and dealing with a bunch of people who just don’t care at all, nor know what they are doing!

I remember seeing Cathay used to have a wait list back when I was an AM member, but I don't think it's an option these days. Will you try your luck emailing [email protected]?

I wonder if anyone else has had luck with the team that manages the inbox
I’ve emailed that five times in two weeks and not a single reply!

Unfortunately Cathay won't be able to help as they're not the ticket issuer, you will have to press with Qantas. You might need to be a bit forceful or give them a helping hand an explain the situation. These are the steps I took and worked for me, but it was an awfully frustrating experience.
  1. You have been charged, points deducted and received a confirmation e-ticket with your 081 number.
  2. If they come back and say "it shows confirmed, nothing we can do", tell them to check the live current status of the ticket as it currently says it shows as "Waitlist".
  3. If they tell you it's a Cathay issue, push back and tell them "Cathay have advised it's a Qantas issue, as Qantas is the ticket issuer. Please check the current live status of the ticket as it shows "Waitlist" on both QF, CX and RJ websites".
  4. By now, any decent agent would've done some digging and seen the status is no longer confirmed and that they will need to send Cathay a request to reinstate.
  5. If the agent you get can't get to the end of step 4, hang up and call again (HUACA).
  6. If they've sent the request for reinstate to Cathay, this could take anywhere up to 2 weeks. I requested on 24/2 and it changed to "Waitlist Confirmed" on 7/3. This status indicates Cathay has acknowledged the reinstatement and have notified Qantas to update the status. Some people have had better luck, where their status updated after a couple of days. In the meantime, keep calling them every 24-48 hours asking for an update on the reinstatement request.
  7. Once you reach "Waitlist Confirmed" and it hasn't updated after a couple of hours, you will need to call Qantas and prompt them to update the ticket status to confirmed.
I have found the number bellroy26 and Qantas Customer Care, 1300 659 161 to be the most helpful. The agents at the 13 13 13 number are not very helpful at all.

I think I've called Qantas over 10 times and have spent more than 10 hours on the phone with them trying to resolve this issue. Every time I called I had to explain the situation as most agents stopped at step 2, which sounds like where you are getting stuck with at the moment. I've had one agent tell me the tickets were cancelled and I would receive a refund, another tell me there's nothing they can do, didn't even offer the reinstatement request. But I just kept HUACA and hoping for a better agent.

Hi all, new to this thread. Very similar issue with a QFF booking on a CX leg from SIN-HKG-LHR later in Nov23. Both QF App and CX website say "waitlisted". Thought the waitlist may resolve itself but based on this thread, seems like being proactive is the way to go.

@gojun Your step-by-step post is incredibly helpful (and literally helped me sleep at night yesterday).

I called first this morning at 7am and it sounded like I got an offshore customer service rep so was ready to go multiple rounds. As soon as I mentioned CX and request to reinstate ticket for my two CX legs the rep said sure and another team would get onto this today. Based on her direct response albeit sleepy demeanour - she has either dealt with this before and knows what she's doing (fingers crossed), or she just didn't want to deal with something like this at 7am and brushed this off "to another team".

Will be calling back 7am daily to check.

@bellroy26 If I could please trouble you for that alternate contact number too. Could not work out how to PM. The only line available at 7am is their 13 13 13 number - which seems is automatically routed offshore...

Hey @bellroy26,

I'm having a similar issue with my Cathay flights to JFK later this year. I would also love to have this number as I've tried multiple times to 13 13 13 with no luck. The operator always seems to seek assistance and never have a solution!

Cheers

Hi all,

After I got Yahoo News involved and with the help of Matt Graham, Qantas finally ticketed the flights!

Mat
I've actually saw this post first, which has led me to this forum and sign up. This is such a headache and I can't believe it is coming from QANTAS.

I got exactly the same issue, called a couple times and the last agent told me that she sent the reinstatement request to Cathay on 04/03, the booking is still waitlisted, fingers crossed 🤞
