QFd - QFi transfer at Syd (75 minutes)

Friends,

I have an international trip booked through Qantas which has a transfer time in Syd of 1:15. Domestic flight is scheduled for arrival just after 8am on Sunday morning.

This seems incredibly tight to transfer from Domestic to International? The flights are both on the same booking, so I'm assuming I at least don't have to pick up bags and check-in at Syd again.

Apart from having no time at all in the Syd F-Lounge, am I (and my baggage) likely to make such a tight turnaround? In the event of a missed connection, would QF book me on any other airlines to get me to my destination in time (or bump me to the flight the day after, causing chaos with my plans!)?
If it is going to cause chaos with your plans why take a chance. 75 minutes is heaps of time if all goes well, but it only takes a bit of bad weather or other delay for the inbound flight to cause you a whole lot of stress. I always overnight at Sydney airport if I have an international flight in the morning. Rydges is inexpensive and you can just stroll across the road, checkin and enjoy breakfast at the lounge stress free...

We are doing that in September and QF63 isn't until 11ish.

I agree but why should the client have to pay for their own transport when I feel QF should be providing it?

Which QF do provide the transport. The other issue I see will the taxi drivers be willing to take on the short fare (regardless of legalities)

I see your problem and raise you.

Booked QF flights ADL-SYD-PEK online using the flight pairs that QF offered and the SYD connection time is 60mins.

After booking I called the call centre and they said that this connection time was OK. Yikes!

I got my ADL-SYD flight changed to something earlier to both minimise stress and spend some time in the Flounge.

I find 60min connection time is SYD very optimistic!

Did you get it changed through res or was it done at the airport? Did it cost you anything?

The amount of times I've heard "I asked the TA if we could have an earlier flight to give us more time in SYD but they assured me that 1 hour was fine" is just ridiculous. They obviously haven't been in the situation where SYD is down to a single runway (eg high winds) so incoming flights are delayed or cancelled by SYD ATC in order to sequence the arrivals.

Flight change was done via the QF call centre. Thankfully there was no charge otherwise I would have been upset.

Besides I figured that I probably saved QF some $$ with regard to re-accommodating me on the next international and accommodation, meals etc due to a missed connection.

Aircraft door opened at SYD dom 06:15 this morning.
Strolled to the J lounge to perform the necessary early morning functions.
Strolled back to gate 11 for the transfer bus.
Presented at TG check-in at 06:50.
Ensconced in the SQ F lounge at 07:05.

Early this month on a Saturday morning with a 100 minute connection I ended with about 15 minutes in the lounge - and that was only after being permitted to jump the queues at T3 Gate 15 as a WP.

I didn't realise there was such a benefit for the bus - whenever I've used it (albeit it, opposite direction), there has been the one distinct snake of a queue. Is there a separate queue/door for WPs?

Regards,

BD

We had a similarly short connection time Adl - Syd - HK on a Sunday July morning. I worried about the timing given winter and fog in Adl. When MrP achieved WP it was a no brainer. Now flying into Syd the night before, overnight at Rydges - which has a great bar, then first thing into F Lounge Sunday morning for Champagne at sunrise.

They were calling QF11 PAX only ... I was on QF127 but approched anyway as time was getting short ... the staff member was about to turn me away but let me through with a comment relating to my WP ...

... and herein lies the major issue with respect to the Bus .... lack of frequency/coordination.

I've seen this in the opposite direction on a Saturday night. Arrive in on delayed WLG to connect down to MEL. Bus is leaving. PER connections getting quite anxious waiting for next 20mins later. Bus arrives, driver/gate-keeper starts loading from front of queue. Call goes out from the back about PER passengers. Bus boarding halted to bring forward the PER passengers. Everyone else gets to wait another 20mins. The "pen" is hardly a premium experience waiting 40mins for a bus.

Regards,

BD
