Sitting in Mt Isa Waiting, Waiting and Waiting for a 737 departing from BNE ETA 10pm Mt Isa Eta departure 11pm for BNE.

There was a strange smell on flight had to turn back to Mt Isa, we sat in plane for approx 1 1/2hr for them to figure out how to remove passengers, stairs too short alternative was a fork lift with a six person box (have photos will post later).

Getting to know some of the passengers the one and only cafe has run out of food - QF have also oganised 30 Pizzas.

All paxs are in good health and safe, lots of laughter and chatter surrounding me so what ever the news is saying about a disaster - not happening.

Ahh an AFF reporter on the ground! Call out for Pizza - I like their thinking!

Also I have seen 737's at ISA so i wonder how/why the stairs are too short.. unless they don't fly them there anymore?

I was one of the lucky ones Great hamburger and chips from cafe before it ran out.

737 landed people getting ready to board. Baggage to land tomorrow with 767 and sent out.

Landed 1.25am everyone is and/or has been looked after by Qantas.

It will be interesting to see how channel nine crew edit this supposed disaster - they were interviewing some people, if I had seen them before hoping into taxi - I would have given a good wrap to Q.

I think the behavour of the passengers was fantastic we all remained calm thur out.

Some quite sensible comment from Plane Talking.
It doesn’t matter where we are when we smell unexpected smoke because fire can spread rapidly and cause heavy loss of life, and the time in which to prevent this happening is sometimes extremely short.
We all know this. For that reason, the diversion of a Qantas 767 to Mt Isa yesterday when smoke was smelled in the coughpit while flying between Darwin and Brisbane is the normal and required professional response of the pilots to an imminent threat.
The fact that there was no obvious cause of the smoke on landing at Mt Isa is not an issue. The good news is that the crew did what they had to do, and had that smoke been the first sign of an uncontrollable fire in the electrics or in the underfloor stowage area, they were giving the 170 people on board the best possible chance of survival.
Qantas 767 smoke emergency at Mt isa was all good news | Plane Talking

Nigelinoz I haven't accessed the web address you supplied but from what I read in your post

All I can say - I was seated in 1A there was a slight odour but NO smoke smells. If the flight deck smelt smoke there was no way they would have left us on board for over an hour to decide how to get everyone off - it would have been rip out those slides.

I just listen to Nine msn saying flight crew were feeling sick - No one was taken away or attended to by medical staff. However we were all asked if we were OK.

Pax were still allowed to use loos in front - if it were serious they would have asked every one to move back from the odour.

Heleigh,
I made my comment because many AFF members tend to take Mr Sandilands articles with a large grain of salt and believe that he has an anti QF bias,so my comments were meant to convey an opinion that this time his comments seem sensible and not a beat up,as for the issue of whether the crew reported smelling smoke in the coughpit well that is what was reported on AV Herald and I wouldn't be surprised if Plane Talking used AV Herald as a source for his comments.
Obviously you were there on scene so are better placed than anyone to know what actually went on and I don't mean to convey any disrespect to you.
Cheers

N'oz I didn't take offence and was not saying the article was bad - just wanted to let others know that it wasn't as dangerous visually and smell wise - Hey not to say there wasn't underlying dangers - I was glad we were diverted and put on another craft.

And the second part was directed at 9 msn video - people had been taken ill by odour

Fair enough,I understand the point you are making.

Thanks Heleigh for the account of events. It looks like QF handled it as well as they could - not thier fault the catering at the airport ran out of food. The main issue of the story was the lack of stairs. You just don't get a 737 at short notice with crew etc and the nearest place to get them at short notice would have been BNE. You just don't have spare 737's all over the country with the crew to operate it.

At least you got one of the new Sky Interior 737s - that would have been an upgrade :)

Channel 9 said it the latest 'embarassment' for Qantas. Seriously? Not every airport in the world has the infrastructure to deal with these sort of rare events. That seemed to be the main part of the story. If they found the smell and could fly out of there, it wouldnt have made news.

Meanwhile a Delta 777 returned to SYD with a technical problem yesterday and a delay of 24 hours and that barely rates a mention.

Thanks VHOEJ Yes very nice Sky Interior 737 but think it came from SYD with engineering crew, it did have an ETA 10pm but landed about 10.40pm and back in air 11.30pm. By my est. all oganise within 4 hours before departure from SYD.

Hi Heleigh

How was the landing at Mt Isa?
Was it like any other landing from a pax point of view or did the make suggestions to review the safety cards or point out exits again just in case?

Just curious.
