Caught QF806 this evening SYdney to CAnberra. Not overly impressed. New 737800 - so Ife which was nice - but seats not as comfy or spacious in my view (I am 6 foot 3 so notice) and the attendants mostly have the impression they wanted to be somewhere else - but the main thing that irked me was the $6 charge for wine/beer (which I was aware of) but also absolutely zero option for soft drinks - only water or a small juice (served with a limp sandwich). So qantas "full service" offer is water or juice, a stale sandwich, served with a scour? Nice.

Flights at this time on qantaslink offer a beer/wine, refreshment, and shock horror - a soft drink! (And mostly a smile) So I guess will have to aim for qantaslink flights, or save money and fly Virgin. Sad state of affairs when have to schedule to avoid mainline!

Yeah but that would be a Dash8 and they have their own issues - FA attitudes can be less than stellar on any flight (though I must admit the last jet SYD - CBR is more often less than more). It's a half hour flight roughly - I usually don't bother with food or drink.

So its a 55 minute flight, yes ? Are you really telling us you can't go without a soft drink or sandwich for that long ?

Notwithstanding the flight is only around an hour (much less in the air), it still costs a pretty penny, up there with SYD-MEL. I think OP makes a reasonable point.

What a ridiculous argument you make! Of course one could forgo a soft drink or a wine for a 55 minute flight - just as one in j class could forgo a meal, more leg room, priority boarding, drinks etc on a 55 minute flight - the argument is that I pay for a full service airline, no matter how short a flight, to get full service. Just as someone paying for j expects more than a y ticket - regardless of flight length.

So to answer your question, no, I am not telling you I can't go without a soft drink or reasonable refreshment on a minus 1 hour flight - what I am telling you is that if that is what a full service airline is offering, I don't see any value in paying more for the "privilege".

Really, the length of this flight is unimportant, it's long enough to have a service, so basic soft drink should be provided.

I often have just a soda water and would be just as annoyed if that were not available.

I am wondering if it were a crew failure or a QF catering/policy failure.

That's a ridiculous thing to say. It's an expensive flight for the miles you fly. Qantas is a full service airline. It's a very basic thing to be able to expect.

Thanks serfty - that's really my point - I have flown this route many times, and do not expect the moon and stars. I personally think pm w/e flights on mainline should have wine and beer - but accept that they don't, so usually have a ginger beer. Would have even been fine if they ran out of that and offered a soda water or cola - but to be haughtily told I could either pay for wine or have a water or juice was just not up to snuff.

And it doesn't make sense for QF to decontent this route with the plays Virgin are making for this route.

The duration of the flight is not in question it is the lack of catering that is.

I have done flights of many hours and all I have had was a few bottles of water and a coffee.

I hope you send feedback.

A diabetic might very well be unable to go without food and a sandwich on a 55 hour flight. But the really question you've failed to consider is when did the OP last eat prior to the flight. How long since they'd had a meal? And remember qantas has told us they have a meal on every flight.

Qantas don't have meals on every flights. On the 'refreshment' flights, the apple is often the best option!

Tell Lyell Strambi that, he is on record saying there is a meal on ever flight. I belief that is also on the website or in marketing emails.

The Cityflyer (bit of a fail outside weekdays) service again. :(

But you should only have had to ask for a soft drink of choice and it should have been provided. Did you ask?

I've done this flight sector countless times over the years and it used to be a top notch offering for such a short flight. Best in the world at one time IMO for a ca 30mins service time. Sad that it's changed so much. :(

Depends on whether you were expecting to be provided with a soft drink and a sandwich as part of the service and how long since your last meal.

I believe his comments were with respect to the trans-con PER services.

I've flown on QF805 more times than I care to count (and QF807 just as many times).

While they don't always load soft drink on the cart, there should certainly be the full selection of soft drink available. My bet is that you got an FA that didn't want to get it for you.

Can't comment on the food. A ~6:50pm arrival means that there's usually dinner organised at the other end :)

Yes, I specifically asked. The exchange went something like "would you like a drink?" As I had heard a FA tell someone In a forward row that wine was $6 I said "yes I would like a ginger beer" the female FA fumbled around for a bit - so i said, "or a coke", she then asked male FA, to which he shook his head and said to me "you can have water or orange juice". I didn't see anyone else have a soft drink - I was in row 12 - and not at all a full flight so they hadn't "run out".

Hm why do you need to pay $6 for wine/beer on this flight? I fly QF807 regularly and I always have a glass of red...
