QF636 SAGA!! How do I ensure this gets looked at?

Because, in this example, common sense tells me that the quickest and easiest way to get from OOL to my destination in Brisbane would be for me to hop in a cab at OOL and bill QF the fare. Are QF willing to pay for this or will they reject my claim on the grounds that they'd already told me there was a bus on the way and that they'd already told me that they would provide a cab from BNE to my destination?

Unfortunately "common sense" and "process" don't always see eye-to-eye.

BD

Considering there was a bus there your point is incorrect. Now had you arrived at BNE to find no cabs then yes it would be reasonable to call a cab and Qantas foot the bill. You would also struggle to find a cab willing to drive you to Brisbane.

Quite - your common sense is to get on the bus.

BUT .... if you knew BNE at that time of night, you'd know that the likelihood of there being no cabs was high - would someone else's common sense not preclude them from getting themself into that situation in the first place?

So, at what point do you allow common sense to kick-in?

Rather: why not understand what the QF protocol is if things go pear-shaped? ... and it's obviously not the "common sense" approach of calling the one QF phone number you'd know would be answered!!

BD

I thought the "protocol" was to get on the bus! Obviously the cab issue is entirely separate, and you'd think "well I will call a cab as none are here." and yes we could call first - and on seeing that they couldn't help (after all that number is essentially sales), calling your own cab would be the next logical step. if we had to get a list of "protocols" off every transport company we'd be carry around a massive book! there comes a time when you need to use a bit of your initiative when something hasn't gone to plan.

I am not defending Qantas here, as something went wrong - for whatever reason. There is also never a guarantee it won't happen again either as human error could easily cause anther mishap. It's one of those things that happens (and far and few between too). People will forget about the 99 times that it was done right and bay for blood on the one time it does goes wrong.

Quite the contrary, as I stated many pages ago, I actually value an airline when they do successfully recover an unexpected situation, just as I harshly judge airlines when they don't; I remember both.

You and I can chew the fat on this forever. The simple fact is that the OP followed all of the steps that you suggested and found themselves in a situation where QF had not delivered on what they had promised and subsequently had to dig themselves out of poo, not of their making. The common sense approach - to call QF -failed.

I'm merely asking what we should do, should we ever find ourselves in the same situation ... surely there is one number to call??

A PASSENGER jet had to make an emergency diversion to the Gold Coast to avoid running out of fuel after it was forced to circle Brisbane Airport.

The Qantas plane was put in a 55-minute holding pattern over the capital city after several other aircraft were given priority to land because they were also running low on fuel.
The dramatic diversion highlights the ongoing congestion problems at Brisbane Airport which prompted The Courier-Mail's#bnelateagain campaign for improvements.

The plane from Melbourne was due to land in Brisbane at 10.15pm but the incident turned the two-hour 10-minute trip into a seven-hour ordeal and left 100 passengers stranded at an empty terminal in the middle of the night.
Qantas said weather was not a factor and that they did not know what caused the extreme delays at Brisbane that night.

Flight QF636 had been circling for about 40 minutes when the captain made the call to head to Coolangatta Airport earlier this month.
But by the time the aircraft was refuelled, the 11pm curfew at the Gold Coast airport was in place and the pilot was refused permission to take off.
After being forced to sit on the plane on the tarmac for 90 minutes, frustrated passengers were eventually bussed from the coast to Brisbane.
"At 2.05am, we arrived at Brisbane Domestic Airport and discovered that the airport was pitch black, with lights off, terminal closed, no cabs or Qantas staff in sight,'' said passenger Jaryd Collins.
"There was literally not a soul in sight and it was so quiet that once we arrived at the cab rank, we could hear the plants rustling in the breeze - and it was freezing.''
There was no answer on the airline's customer service lines and calls to the Frequent Flyer office proved useless. Mr Collins and other travellers organised their own taxis in the end, getting to their homes or hotels at 3am after leaving Melbourne at 8pm. ...

Gee – The Brisbane Courier / Sunday Mail would have absolutely killed for this story if they had gotten wind of it a few weeks back when it all unfolded.

I would hazard a guess that the Courier/ Sunday Mail would still love to have to have a link to this absolute gem of a thread as it highlights so many issues in one tidy package that it’s a god send.

Robyn Ironside is the reporter who handles a lot of the transport and infrastructure stories at the Courier - Email: [email protected] I’m sure she wouldn’t mind a link to this pearler so she could pull this rabbit out of hat one day at some point. –

I passed the link on to Robyn Ironside (Snr reporter 'Infrustrure / T'port' @ News limited Brisbane) a few days ago -She was a bit shocked news of it didn't break at the time -

Given the delay she liked the fact it bought quite a few issue into one package and wanted to run with but had to come up with a way given the lag - Used on the News web site and it takes up a very large slice of Page 2 of todays Courier Mail (reporter Daryl Passmore) - Pressure to build the second run is about to build again -

Any body got anything else that needs a spot light turned on - Hmmmmmm ..... VA's hopeless web sites comes to mind .... but that may get a run soon without any need for 'pushing along' when their full year results are posted tomorrow ........expect blood on the walls for that one.

Frankly little surprised the second major runway hasn't been a 'Job Jobs Nation Building / Infrustrure' wagon rolled out in the election by ANY parties to my knowledge.

The spotlight on this issue is a positive. I fly a lot into Brisbane and am getting tired of the delays. I now factor delays into my bookings, which means a lot of wasted time. I know of many businesses that are avoiding Brisbane. BAC is neglecting their responsibilities and as we know traffic will increase and therefore it will only get worse until another runway goes in.

Hi guys.

This actually got a fair bit of media today. Courier Mail ran it on page 2 of print (Almost the whole page!!) and 4BC called me this afternoon and did a 5-6 minute interview (around 12:15 today) about the whole runway delay issue.

hopefully this will bring a bit more attention and maybe prompt some sort of resolution... But who am I kidding.

ill upload an image of the article later - cant figure out how to do this on iPhone (does anyone know why I can't log in through the AFF app?)

It was well reputed that passenger & airline traffic some 15 years ago that growth figures were on average 15-20 % P.A.
BAC & in consultation with the QLD. Government were well aware of these growth figures.
Despite the evident cosmetic enhancements & slight enlargement of the International Terminal, nothing of a serious upgrade of the runways & terminals etc. has been completed to date, yet passenger traffic has increased substantially over this time period.
The airport was/is/will always make a substantial profit whether from aircraft movement fees, parking, retail &/or leasehold on existing grounds.
The major apparent issue is the runway congestion..
So existing space capacity & lack of curfews avails Brisbane Domestic & International with the perfect opportunity to show to the country & the world a futuristic determined approach to be a major player in the forefront of ground aviation operations.
Please can we show that that Brisbane is a world class city & simply build a second &/or third runway to accommodate statistical & realistic growth for both passenger & freight traffic.
Sensible investment opportunities exist for both government & private enterprise, so all talk aside, all appropriate players, just get on with the job.

Brisbane airport management should be hung out and people allowed to poke sticks at them.
Their arrogance and ignorance continues to astound me. I'm sure they are a political party. Lol.

Is there any further info the op can share on the outcome from QF?

Perhaps he has been 'hushed" :?:

What more is there to share? The OP received some form of compensation from Qantas, supposedly an apology, and the whole thing was splashed out on the news outlets, mostly thanks to this thread, plus the OP talked to these media outlets on the incident.

AFAICT the case is pretty much closed... except damn well all of us pray that should such an incident reoccur we will not see the same outcome.

That's right, issue closed until next time.
