A bit of a hypothetical question but here goes anyway.

My family has 3 seats in J on QF5 using qantas classic reward points for July 2013.
With all the talk of the likely demise of this route I'm a little concerned what might happen.
If the route does go, is it likely we'd we be forced to try and find 3 new seats at late notice or is it more likely that new seats would be allocated to us via heathrow?

Many thanks

Most likely via Heathrow which really isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. If a partnership gets announced (eg Emirates) maybe them.

"All the talk" is just rumours anyway and I'll personally be quite surprised if FRA gets canned.

I do not think Qantas would in any way leave you without a flight at such late notice. They will more than likely route you via LHR and you may be slightly inconvenienced with flight times.

Now Jetstar on the other hand is a totally different story....

So would I ... I believe Qantas generate far more revenue from freight on QF5/QF6 than they do from PAX.

...

[EDIT]
Then again, JQ 330's have plenty of cargo space ...
[/EDIT]

Late notice for a July 2013 flight?

I still think MUC would be a more likely JQ destination.

If the tickets have already been issued then the airline has to reaccommodate you on to alternative flights so you would not have to find seats again.

I would have a look at your booking every couple of weeks just to make sure there are no changes. You can also allocate your seats any time from now also which you can do via the manage my booking feature on the QF website.

I also believe it tends to do well in the premium cabins.

I have a QF5 JASA booked next year too, and am then connecting on to LHR, so if routed via London it could be a bonus staus run, though the luggage tag would read -LHR Via LHR Via FRA which might prove confusing. Do you think the bags would be at the carousel at the end?

QF have to can one route, as they won't have the aircraft for it next year, FRA is the logical one.
Is it?

I would have thought Tokyo.

They would just route you direct to LHR. You can always apply for original routing credit (ORC) to get the points/SC you would gain for SIN-xFRA-LHR

Tokyo will still leave them short, LOTFAP needs 6 aircraft, two each for DFW and LAX to SYD and 2 for BNE-SYD, Two for South Africa and One for Chile. FRA needs two alone, and you also need to factor in maintenance etc, Tokyo can go A330, FRA cannot. Possible the announcement is on hold while they sort out the codeshare with the springboks thats still up in the air, if QF cannot get their way with the ACCC then that would free up birds.

The USA needs 8 aircraft - QF93/QF94, QF11/QF12, QF107/QF108 & QF15/QF16.

Also, 4 are needed for LHR QF9/QF10 & QF1/QF2

I make that 11 747s. The announcement says they'll have 15 of all types. Enough?

Some of those would be A380s?

My figures are for 744, assuming A380 utilisation remains the same (no more new ones until FY2017), doesnt really change the figures anyway because taking an A380 off means a 744 replacement generally.

Certainly - for a proper look, you need to include all equipment that has the capacity/range for the routes.

They already substitute one for the other on an ad hoc basis ...

Which has always made me wonder why they don't run an A380 as QF5 when they need maintenance at least to minimise costs on ferrying from LHR.

They will go down to 15 this year, but eventually 9 (the latest refurbs) soon thereafter. I am guessing that will probably happen this time next year, by which time South Africa will be sorted and that when FRA will go, schedule wise. Probably see an announcement Feb next year at the half year earn call.
