ABC News has just reported the SIA have now grounded 3 of their A380's.

The plot thickens!

Nah, more likely a case of reality striking, as I alluded to when it was announced QF had three engines with issues and SQ said they had none despite having more of them.

If they're consistently inaccurate in reporting aviation matters it's probably a fair indication of the accuracy of anything else that happens on this planet.

Indeed - I've often thought this when I see the regular glaring inaccuracies in media reports about the mining industry (my field of semi-expertise).

I've often wondered if everything reported is just as inaccurate (and I'm sure it is!).

UPDATE 12.12pm: SINGAPORE Airlines has grounded A380s in Melbourne and Sydney this morning after a crew's refusal to fly in London this morning.


Concerns over the future of Rolls-Royce powered A380s took a new turn today after one of Singapore Airlines big jets was grounded at Heathrow airport.

Heraldsun.com.au was told the crew refused to fly the jet which was due to take-off at 8.30am (AEDT) for Singapore after oil was found in one of the jet's turbines, the same problem that was detected at the weekend on three engines that were removed from Qantas jets.

Interesting, at least EK have no issues with pilot confidence, todays A380 into Sydney is a brand new one on its first revenue flight!

I think that EK don't use RR power. I think that they are EA powered.

To be fair ,the EK hulls have differnt engines,which as far as we know, hasnt had this problem.
Hindsight is always nice to have but it seems QF's "Conservative" approach to safety by grounding the aircraft now seems to have been right course of action.

Correct, I just found it interesting that they decided to put their newest bird on the SYD run, it could be interpreted as one up man ship along the lines of "we have plenty of A380s flying" , at the same time I am sure the less educated EK customers flying today may show some FUD, which is easily overcome by saying "we have a brand new plane" without the need to get into the technical detail.

Gee, bet SQ Management won't be happy with that.

If SQ can demote a Capt to F/O for doing a go-around, it certainly makes you wonder if there will be any repercussions for the crew for cancelling this flight (despite being totally justified in their actions). :shock:

Just a big what if here, but if RR couldn’t fix the issue without manufacturing new engines or something along those lines, how hard would it be to switch engine providers? Presuming of course they have enough spares.

Is it even possible?

Downright difficult.

At the very least I noted a post somewhere that the different engine makes have different mountings. There would be many other factors as well.

Possible but not easy, perhaps downright difficult.

I noted a post somewhere that the different engine makes have different mountings. Matching mountings are built into the airframe.

Impossible AFAIK for existing aircraft, there would be airworthiness issues, reprogramming of onboard systems and possibly rewiring etc.

So Qantas’ only hope is that RR know what they’re doing and fix the engine, otherwise, they’re sort of in limbo.

RR have been here before (perhaps without the dramtic explosion, but certainly with IFSD's) (think the CX A330's, think Embraer's 10 years back.....)

Out of curiosity, and probably because I've watched too much american TV recently, and all the legal adverts that go with it, would Qantas have any inclination to sue RR for the costs involved in this whole sorry affair?
And if QF sued, then would SQ sue?
I'm sure I can find a law firm here in the US who would take it on - they all have 1-800 numbers, so Mr Joyce could give them a call

CSI would investigate the cause
Benson and Stabler would find the culprits
and then Denny Crane could take it to court.
