QF12 delay ex JFK

Catching QF12 home today JFK - SYD
It appears the plane from BNE to LAX was significantly delayed departing which is the plane from LAX to JFK
I am curious what usually happens with the connection in LAX or any other thoughts people might have
The LAX to Syd part still shows on time
As it is a different plane is it likely Qantas will leave without the connecting new York passengers?
Not looking forward to spending a lengthy time in the lounge at JFK :(
*my intention is not a Qantas negativity post just never had such a delayed flight

QF11 LAX-JFK is showing a 3 hour delay.

QF12 is showing a 3 hour delay ex-JFK as well. It looks like they won't be holding the QF12 LAX-SYD.

A bit of discussion in the QF delays/cancellations thread on this one. QF16 is still showing as an on time departure on Wednesday evening which doesn't make much sense.

I'd have thought either the night in LAX or the scenic route via a domestic connection in BNE. Still a decent amount of seats on QF16 being sold though, so who knows...

There was a delay of several hours yesterday to the QF15 ex-BNE, with a stuff-up over a part they were waiting on. Hence the late arrival into LAX and late operation of the LAX-JFK sector.

To answer the OP's question about holding the QF12 in LAX - this has happened on occasion, but certainly not always. Seems to depend on a range of factors, including the number of pax continuing on, the length of the delay, whether there are seats that they can be given on the QF16 and then do a domestic transfer to SYD, etc.

Check the Qantas site which says 1.30 pm however at JFK 2.00
Have to say not one of my most successful trips

In my experience, they move QF16 PAX to QF94/QF12 and use the freed up space on the QF16 aircraft for QF12 PAX.
 
There are a number of things QF can do with the JFK flight when delays happen. It depends where and how long the delay is expected to be.

If the delay is on the inbound transpac QF15, which normally goes on to form the transcon tag, they can cancel the JFK legs of QF11/12 and transfer people to AA, either on the dozen or so daily non stops, or the 30 odd other daily options with connections via SFO, DFW, ORD, PHX, DCA, MIA or PHL. In this case, they could get JFK-AU pax rerouted via DFW or SFO instead of LAX.

If they keep the JFK sector operating, and there is a delay on the way back to LAX, it depends on how many people are making the connections to each flight and how many seats are available on QF16. If QF12 JFK-LAX is late, QF16 will be late as it is the same aircraft.
Although QF12 LAX-SYD has the same flight number, it is a different aircraft and doesn't have to wait. They would just need to change the call sign of one of the QF12s so that there isn't the same call sign for 2 aircraft in the same IFR at the same time. However, most people on the transcon will be connecting to the SYD bound QF12, so this will normally wait.
QF94 to MEL is time sensitive. A delay to 94 is likely to cause the next QF93 to be late. Unless the amount of connections from QF12 to QF94 can't be accommodated on 16 and 12 to BNE and SYD, 94 is leaving them behind.

Once the 787 flights on 95/96 start in a couple of weeks, there will be more options to rebook delayed transcon pax.


The QF website flight status page is often slow to update, with other online tracking sites (such as FR24 or google flights, or a GDS site like expertflyer) often posting updates before the QF site (or even the airport signage) does.
 
Happened to me in March.

I was booked on a business award LAX BNE MEL but with a 150 minute late QF11, I was swapped to QF94 (and got to fly with jb747).
 
I feel very sorry for eveyone on this flight.
People are being 're routed via San Francisco,New Zealand...other capitol cities
Currently waiting for our hotel (arranged by Qantas) to actually have a room available.
So far at 2 hours and waiting for a room.
Landed over 4 hours ago . Edited to add room allocated at 9.15 am local time LAX
Getting a tad tired however was fortunate enough to have our business class seat from JFK to LAX.
At this rate we Will be back at Qantas check in at LAX without actually getting a hotel room (Yep said slightly to tongue in cheek )

Wow ridiculous.
Where was the delay? Airport service desk or hotel check-in?
 
The issues with the QF website appear to largely reflect a policy that some flights (which we can work out via back of the envelope are certain to be delayed) do not have their 'status' updated until the flight that is forming them has departed and reached cruising altitude.

So for instance if QF23 departed SYD two hours late (and hence QF24 will be delayed), the latter tends not to be shown as 'delayed' by say two hours or close to it unless QF23 is in the air, and quite a few minutes out of SYD.

I am unsure why QF doesn't update such flights sooner. Is it a programming question, or just conservatism in the doling out of information to booked passengers and the general public 'meeters and greeters?'
 
In our little group of noisy people in the BA first lounge at JFK we had at our finger tips more information than the staffknew
We need that QF11 had been diverted before they did ditto with cancellation of QF16
One of the random things was Qantas called my husband and I to the front desk to ask us if we had called Qantas to reboot flights.
I did wonder why not just call us on our mobiles.
Btw we hadn't
 
In all of the discussion about this...has anyone said why it actually diverted? Looks medical to me...
