Just got home from an interesting, fun filled trip from LAX - SYD - ADL.
Got on board in LAX on the 26th for an 11.50pm take off.

Just finished the first glass of champagne, and there is an announcement over the PA that the captian was not on board and was receiving medical attention. They asked us to leave the plane while they looked for a replacement captain (at the time, me thinks that's unlikely).

So we all got off and all the QP members were hosted into the F lounge at LAX for about 1 1/2 hours before they announced we were all going to the Hilton and the flight would leave the following morning. There were a few moans, but everyone I spoke to was philosophical about it.
We left at 11am with a different crew and arrived into SYD at 7.30pm last night, which meant for me, another night at the Mercure as I was too late to make an ADL connection.

In the bus to the Mercure was a Pr**k who was mouthing off about how bad this all was, what a waste of space Qantas were, etc etc. I gently tapped him on the shoulder and asked if he had ever been sick. He looked at me weirdly and said yes.
I told him it was only human and it did happen, so let it go. He went quiet after that.

Up until this time, the QF staff had been great and I had no issues anywhere with the whole process, other than a little frustration about not getting home when I expected to. They met us everywhere, had details on what was going on and were great.

When I went to bed in the Mercure, I had a dream about excess baggage

When a group of us arrived at the domestic check in we all went to the check in counters and fronted up.

I then heard those dreaded words every traveler hates - "EXCESS BAGGAGE"

My Customer Service Representative (from now on called Check In Chick - CIC) informed me that as I had 3 bags I would have to pay excess baggage. I explained this was a booking from LAX and the bags had already been checked in at LAX and I was entitled to 3 bags so there was no excess baggage.

CIC informed me 23kg was the limit and I would pay for the rest.
A discussion ensued where it was finally agreed that as it was a continuation of an international booking, my limit was 2 bags. I kept explaining that as a gold/QP member I get an extra bag, and she told me she knew nothing about that rule and had to call her supervisor

Another CIC was already on the phone to the supervisor about a similar issue with another fellow passenger from 107, so I waited patiently for 15 minutes while she waited for the supervisor. Eventually she came back to me and said she would waive the excess fee as a goodwill gesture (I suspect this was to get me on my way as the queue was getting longer and longer).
I politely said thank you, but did add that she did not need to waive anything as it was my normal entitlement.

From a customer service point of view, and a staff knowledge point of view, I was pretty pissed off about the whole thing, and I suspected others would have the same problems, so I decided to report the whole thing.

When I got to the QP, I asked for the manager and when I told the counter assistant why I wanted to talk to them, she said don't bother. They (Qantas Club) don't talk to the staff downstairs and they could do nothing about it. She told me to go back downstairs and report it to "them".

Eventually got hold of the Duty Airport Manager (Pat) and she was great. Could not understand why the 2 bag issue had come up as it was all in the original booking. But she also told me she knew nothing about the extra bag for QP members. She took all the details and did promise to follow it.

And then she upgraded me to J for the trip home to ADL. :):)

I guess my point is that whilst this delay had been inconvenient, up until the SYD check in, I was cool with it, and just going with the flow. As Tony Abbot knows, cough Happens" and you can't do much when a Captain is sick.

But the experience in SYD really made me see red. It was so unnecessary had the staff member known and understood her job, as well as knowing her products.

Nobody got hot under the collar anywhere, and all the discussions were perfectly calm, but it did leave a bad taste in the mouth.

And I also believe one of the LAX - BNE flights was also canceled for mechanical reasons on the same night.

You were not alone with issues according to QF Source:

The QANTAS Source - the independent, impartial guide to all things QANTAS.

Two Boeing 747-400 departures were delayed overnight tonight. QF16 to Brisbane due out at 2350 departed at 1450 on 27th operated by Boeing 747-438ER VH-OEF which had come in from Brisbane as the 27th February QF15.
QF108 to Sydney was delayed from 2350 on 26th until 1020 on 27th and was operated by Boeing 747-436 VH-OJQ which had operated from Brisbane as the 26th February QF15. VH-OJQ was the scheduled aircraft for this service so seems to have had a technical issue.
It would appear that VH-OEB which operated Sydney - Los Angeles as QF107 on 26th February and was scheduled to operate QF16 on 26th also appears to have technical issues.

Throw in a two class 747 being moved onto the PER-SIN route and you have a nice situation for QF ops to deal with.

Oops, got the flight number wrong - it should have been 108, not 107. I think I'm tired:shock:

The extra bag (23kg max for economy and premium economy) is only for Qantas Club, Silver, Gold and Platinum Frequent Flyers on flights to/from The Americas. International flights to/from other destinations would only entitle you to an additional 10kg allowance above the standard 23kg (economy, premium economy) limit.

There is no excuse for check-in staff to not know the rules as published by Qantas.

Excuse me!!! Don't know about the 3 bag rule????

How long have they been working at Qantas???

It's 3 bags! It's always been 3 bags!!

This makes me mad!!!!

Good on you for taking the issue up.

It's hopeless staff like this that drag the entire airline down, and I feel sorry for the hard-working genuine staff who get lumped in with these!

Sorry - rant over.

You have hit the nail on the head, and that was what I was trying to get across to the airport manager, but even she didn't know it!

When I was at the check in counter, I asked the CIC what she would allow me if I was traveling to the USA and she said 2 bags - that's it. I am guessing that the computer must tell them about the extra QP/gold bag when they go to do the ticketing because otherwise many others would have this problem.

Its also not as though Sydney is a country airport where you would not expect the staff to have all the knowledge.

Re: QF107 LAX-SYD Feb 26 didn't leave - it lost its Captain. Good and BAD service fro

It just occurred to me - I hope JB747 wasn't the sick captain!!!!

It's also not as if this is some new obscure complicated rule..... It's simple, and it's been in place forever.....

The only thing that's changed is the reduced weight per piece if you're not in F or J.

Not if it was a 747 aircraft. He is an A380 Captain now.

I think flying the A380 is keeping him busy.

It's a pretty obvious bloody rule as well....no excuses on that one QF, you are an international airline. Smarten Up.

Re: QF107 LAX-SYD Feb 26 didn't leave - it lost its Captain. Good and BAD service fro

I know someone on the same flight - you got the story about the sick captain right. Cant do much about it but when the BNE flight went tech, the crew were told to be on standby. The flight crew weren't told the same message - they could have operated the flight but decided to go to the bar instead. Needless to say that ruled them out. Very costly for the airline when the backup presented itself and simple communication failed.

Shame to hear about your baggage drama but apparently given the time of night, all the staff at the terminal were very good in terms of getting people to the hotel as soon as possible and in an orderly fashion. That has failed in the past so hopefully that process is being improved.

I have nothing bad to say about anyone from QANTAS in the US or Oz as far as the changing flights, hotel accommodation or anything else.

It was all handled professionally and they tried to keep us informed all along the way.

It only went pear shaped at the end of the exercise at the baggage drop at Sydney domestic, who had not been informed of anything unusual, but then again, why should they have been as all the info was in the computer, and all they really had to do was use their heads.

Oops, there's the problem :(

I suspect this might have been more an issue of timing, rather than 'deciding to go to the bar'...which I might add would be well and truly closed by the time they got to the hotel.

Firstly, there are no standby crews downline. Standby is itself a duty, and whilst there is nothing to stop them being scheduled, it will not count as time free of duty for the CASA rules. Not everyone drinks (all the time) and generally someone can be found, but once you add in time lost in finding them...time before they get to the airport...time to brief/settle in, you will have consumed at least 2 to 3 hours, and then the rest of the crew will be out of time. So, basically, unless you can replace the missing man almost instantly, then out of LA, you will need an entirely new crew.

The captain of the Brisbane flight could have replaced him, but they would not have taken him until they decided that his own flight wasn't going. Again, I would expect that appreciable time was lost before that decision. And, assuming both flights were scheduled at exactly the same time, by the time the crew woukd reach the bug out time for the shorter Brisbane flight, they would be well past it for Sydney.

Re: QF107 LAX-SYD Feb 26 didn't leave - it lost its Captain. Good and BAD service fro

I'm wondering, and this is not to excuse the behaviour of the SYD staff, but is it possible they have no clue about the international baggage rules, because rarely would people check in for a DOM flight in SYD that connects to an INT flight from a different airport? (And even less frequently have people who have arrived on an INT flight, stay overnight, then leave the next day on a DOM flight all on the same ticket?)

The international-to-domestic transfer desk in sydney know the baggage rules inside out (and frequently let you through with even more than you are supposed to have).

But I guess most people who have to go overseas from Sydney, are departing directly on an INT flight rather than connecting somewhere else (except for a few through MEL, and maybe occasionally through BNE).

The other thing to consider is that most people going to the US leave AUS with a lot less baggage than they come back with. Whenever I go, I usually take a case inside a case - so only go over with effectively one checked bag. By the time I finish shopping, I'm coming back with 2 or 3 bags, and maximising my additional baggage limit. But when I fly back via SYD, then onto a DOM flight to MEL, it's through the transfer desk checkin, and they are aware that I'm allowed that much luggage. So is it fair to say that most people flying to the US ex-Sydney on a DOM flight connecting in MEL or BNE, are unlikely to have 3 bags? Maybe...

HOWEVER, I am not condoning the behaviour of the QF staff - this is still not an excuse not to know the baggage rules, just because you don't encounter the situation.

I've connected from MEL or CNS to the USA via SYD with 3 bags many, many times in the last 10 years and I have never had a problem.

The domestic SYD checkin staff would ALWAYS be dealing with people on an international ticket including:

- all those OS visitors either from the Americas or on a RTW ticket who have a stopover in SYD before a domestic onward flight (and this would be a huge volume of pax)

- Aussies travelling domestically on a PNR that includes international flights

- PAX frequently delayed and accommodated in SYD due to missed connections. Again - a frequent occurring situation due in large part because of SYD's curfew which limits QF's ability to fix misconnects.

So whilst I accept that CNS perhaps has a low number of WP's checking in for international connections on a daily basis (as an example of acceptable check-in mistakes), there is no excuse for SYD staff to not know the rules.

Even less of an excuse for the supposed "manager" to have "never heard of it"!

Re: QF107 LAX-SYD Feb 26 didn't leave - it lost its Captain. Good and BAD service fro

I've had something similar happen to me as well on an international departure from Melbourne to Hong Kong, where the CIC(check in chick) told me I had too much luggage in terms of weight.

I was WP flying economy and I had specifically checked the website prior to flying to make sure I was within limit. I think, according to the website, I was entitled to 64kg regardless of which class I flew in. It was some combination of being ticketed past a certain date, and flying within a certain date or something, I can't remember what it was, but it definitely entitled me to 64kg at the time.

She politely told me that I had too much luggage, but she would accomodate me as I was being upgraded to J(as an op-up) and it would be ok. Even though I could have gone on without any fuss, it was a matter of principle that she know that she wasn't letting me through on a whim, it was because I was entitled to it. So I whipped out the iPhone, browsed to the relevant page and showed her. She was surprised to say the least, and then she told me that they hadn't been informed of this from management, and she even showed me some cheat-sheet she had on what various levels of Qantas FF were allowed, etc... All well and good I tell her, but travellers are not packing and travelling based on what is on their cheat-sheet, but based on information publicly available on the website.

All I wanted was some consistency because if I packed based on the website information, thats what I expect they honour.

Anyway, she agreed that I was correct based on the website info and said she would follow it up. I think the website has now been updated with the current info, as per what she thought was correct. Which is good, from a consistency point of view.

If what happened to the OP happened to me, would have done the same thing, whipped out the website on iphone or laptop and show it to them, in plain English in black and white, that any QP and QF FF with status higher than Bronze were entitled to 3 pieces to/from Americas... Would have liked to have seen what she would have said then. It stinks of bad training when they don't know their own material!

Edit: Seems that when I checked the website info prior to flying, it may have been showing the wrong info as that 64kg limit for WP isn't supposed to come into effect till June 2011, and I think thats whats been reported in multiple other postings. However, at the time, I'm positive that it showed 64kg for my circumstances, and the check in chick agreed with that after reading it. Regardless, I still would have kicked up a stink if the website had the wrong info and they penalised me for it.

This is even worse than simply a sub-standard employee.

It's these kind of systemic failures that QF needs to actually address and fix before they worry about all the other nonsense that's trumpeted in every edition of Australian Way.....

Oh that's right..... QF has no competition.... Oh well, might as well continue to provide inferior basic staple services ;)

(in all seriousness, there are a lot of good things i like about QF and don't engage in mindless QF-bashing. But IMHO getting these kinds of basic service right is like learning to walk or eat.... They're kinda important and there's no excuse for getting it wrong)

Re: QF107 LAX-SYD Feb 26 didn't leave - it lost its Captain. Good and BAD service fro

I too as a Platinum am getting some strange comments about baggage from QF domestic checkin staff.

A few observations:

(1) The staff appear to be quite junior (even those at the priority queues).

(2) The staff themselves have no idea about baggage allowances - they are simply doing what the computer tells them.

(3) I often travel with an infant in the booking and 90% of the time have to remind checkin staff that the porta cot, car seat, pram etc are not included as pieces/weight or whatever else the checkin staff member is trying to have a go at.

(4) I have been warned that come June things are getting even stricter so I shudder to think what checkin treatment I am in for then!

(5) I feel for people that travel with sporting things or musical instruments - I am sure that they cop abuse at checkin.
