Hunting the Northern Lights: Tromso and Alta (Norway)

After an early night, and waking up several times, the alarm for todays activities went at something like 5am. I still wasn’t 100%, but didn’t want to miss the amazing day ahead that was planned. For the days itinerary – Snowmobiling to the tri-country border of Norway, Finland and Sweden, followed by a night of chasing the northern lights. A long day ahead, but one that would hopefully be worth it.

Arriving at the meeting point at the bus terminal at 0615, for the 10hr long day which should have us back into Tromso around 4-4:30pm in preparation for the lights tour which departed at 5:30pm. We intentionally booked with the same company for both tours, just in case of any unforeseen issues.

Leaving Tromso, we had a 2hour or so journey our to our destination of Kilpisjärvi in Northern Finland which was where the Snowmobile adventure would start from. Due to the snowy conditions, the 2hr trip ended up taking close to 3-3.5hrs with multiple stops being made to clean the windscreen wipers of the bus due to snow built up. This was made up with the fantastic scenery that we passed – when we could see out the windows of course when it wasn’t snowing!

Upon arrival, the 20 of us on the bus were split into 2 groups of 10 each. We went and got kitted out in Snow Gear, which included a very warm suit, boots, gloves and helmet before getting a safety briefing of how to operate the snowmobile. I was the designated driver for the day, with mum opting to enjoy the view from the rear seat on the snowmobile. This was her choice, not that I was going to complain! The extra clothing was excellent, as not once did we get cold.

1745477384410.png

The issue of the day though – was visibility. This would come and go, with the snow conditions deteriorating on/off to blizzard like conditions making it hard to follow the tracks of the snowmobile in front of us, along with actually being able to even see the snowmobile in front of us. The ground was extremely soft, with even the group leader commenting how conditions certainly weren’t easy with all the fresh snow that had fallen. On our journey to the tri-country border, we stopped a few times for photos. The ride took us over a nearby lake, up and down some hills and tight paths and through the trees before ending at the goal of the tri-country border of Norway, Finland and Sweden.

In summer, this Cairn is essentially like a marker Bouy/Island that has its own pathway that people can walk up and around. Instead, we got to walk around it in a matter of seconds in deep snow!

And then how we saw it on the day!

After taking in the amazing spot, it was time to head back to base via the same snowmobile path. Visibility was still very low, and throughout the journey back only came off the path once whilst trying to clean the fresh snow off my windshield and helmet visor – but was thankfully able to drive back out with the instructors supervision (just in case!). We also stopped for lunch, with a freeze dried savory rice mixture which was very nice – though I could only eat about half of it whilst still recovering from whatever I had the previous day, but feeling much better.

We got back to base and got out of our suits, and waited for the other group to return from their trip before making the way back into Tromso. Due to the weather conditions, this proved another long trip back at we arrived just after 5:30pm, with our light hunting trip due to depart at 5:30pm!

Arriving back at the bus terminal in Tromso, we went in search of the Northern Lights Tour (thankfully same company – done intentionally for this reason), where they knew we were on our way and were expecting us. However, due to the long day we didn’t have any of our camera gear etc. After some discussions and options, it was agreed that they’d drop us off our the hotel and wait for a few minutes whilst we went up to grab our cameras etc and back onboard. No time for dinner – this was a time critical mission!

Back on the bus very speedily, the Northern Lights Tour could commence! We got the details of how the night would work, and due to the conditions and expected cloud cover the destination for tonight would be – Northern Finland, and roughly the exact area that we had only been throughout the day. This meant another 3hr journey back the way we came haha!

Our initial stop was chosen and we got out and set up with the camera and hoped the lights would appear. We managed to get a very brief glimpse of these, only to have it ruined by cloud cover!

1745477508837.png

With cloud cover inbound, it was back on the bus to another spot about 30-45mins down the road. Certainly clocking up the km’s today on a bus!

Upon arrival at the new spot, the clouds had cleared and the Northern Lights were out once again! The tour leaders started the campfire and dished out dinner, whilst we admired the majestic view in the sky! I’ll let the pictures do the talking!

An amazing night was had – which ultimately turned out to be a very very long day! Certainly no complaints were had as the spectacular viewing of the Northern Lights were just amazing to watch – both via the camera, and in person!

The journey back to Tromso started, and by the time we got back to the hotel – it was 3:15am in the morning. A quick cup of tea was had to digest the most amazing day and night, before finally getting some well needed sleep around 4am.

What an amazing 24hrs, which included something like 12+ hrs of driving! You couldn’t wipe the smile off my face!

Northern Lights Scorecard: 1/2 :)

Following along as we were in Norway early last year and Tromso was probably my favourite stop on the trip.
If you like great pubs head to Macks, had a fantastic time albeit too short stay there
Didn't get to Macks pub, as ran out of time despite having 7 full days in Tromso - Maybe next time!

Hope you soon feel better @ADLhighflyer
Whatever I had at the start of the trip, it was unfortunately short and sharp but didn't let it affect the next day thankfully :)

Amazing photos - very impressive
Thanks! Many more photos of Amazing Norway coming!
I’m headed to Svalbard, tromso, Bergen and Oslo next January/February and am looking forward to it but after reading this TR, I’m now positively brimming with excitement.
You'll absolutely love it! The Train journey can be booked via a Norway in a Nutshell tour which allows for stops in Voss (I did 2 nights there previously) and the Flam Railway

After a truly wonderful day, believe it or not I was up at a reasonable hour. Today was planned as a day of rest before the day trips continued for the following 2 days, before heading off to the next stop in Alta.

Late Morning, headed out to grab some breakfast and a well deserved (and needed) cup of coffee. Finally – a decent cup of coffee was found! After last nights success, I discussed with mum whether it was worth going out again hunting for the Northern Lights given we really enjoyed the particular tour company and their very thorough explanations and details on everything. So, next minute out came my credit card and within seconds had purchased another chance at hopefully seeing the Northern Lights.

Given the previous late night, we leisurely spent the afternoon taking in a few of the local souvenir stores and quick photo stops around Tromso before resting for a few hours before heading off to our meeting point back at the local bus station for the 5:30pm departure.

The clouds weren’t our friend again, so the plan for tonight was to travel to – Finland again! This meant close to around another 3hr drive back toward the Border (and eventually all the way back to Tromso again!).

A couple of small stops were made to check the skies, but ultimately weren’t clear enough so we kept on going a little further into Finland in the hope of clear skies. When the bus eventually stopped, we were told to get off quick smart to admire the immediate view right outside.

The skies then eased a little, so we were able to move into the middle of a nearby field, where we set up our little campsite for the evening. What followed next, was simply described by our guide as one of the most majestic nights that in 7 years of guiding tours to hunt the Northern Lights that he has ever seen, with the skies just unloading with colour for the next two hours!

This was an incredible night, with the Northern Lights moving fast directly above us all. It certainly gave me time to try and play with various camera settings (either rightly or wrongly!) and just simply take in the amazing view!

Light activity eventually subsided, so we were all finally able to grab some food – again the local freeze dried food (certainly some good stuff!), hot chocolate and biscuits before eventually starting the long trek back to Tromso arriving back at 3am. So tired, but eternally grateful for making the decision to head out light hunting!

All this and still only at the end of our 3rd full Day in Tromso!

Northern Lights Scorecard: 2/3

Hello,
Loving the trip report and thank you so much for sharing the incredible pictures and details. Do you mind sharing the contact details of the tour you used for the northern lights. I think I might be convinced to squeeze Tromso into my Europe plans later in the year.

Hello,
Loving the trip report and thank you so much for sharing the incredible pictures and details. Do you mind sharing the contact details of the tour you used for the northern lights. I think I might be convinced to squeeze Tromso into my Europe plans later in the year.
You're welcome! The 2 Northern Lights tours above were booked with Chasing Lights. Ultimately, the key for finding the lights is clear skies, solar activity and of course darkness!

Following on from 2 nights of Northern Light Hunting, today’s day trip was to be a trip of the Lyngen Alps… or so we thought. Late the previous night, I received an email saying that the tour was cancelled due to the strong risk of avalanches in the area we’d be touring given the snowfall that had occurred (and was still happening) over the past few days.

So the plan today, was to head out and grab breakfast somewhere as first priority (and a much needed coffee) before working out the plan for the day. Weather was still up and down snow wise, so it was going to be very hit and miss all day no matter what we did.

Wandering into town, it was clear the snow on the ground was easing but still very slippery walking around.

Found this awesome little café at the far end of town where we had a great carrot soup and coffee each, and checking the weather conditions for the next few hours. The forecast was dull for the following 2 hours, so headed back to the hotel trying to time the weather conditions perfectly when the weather was expected to be perfect for the walk across one of Tromso’s main bridges in order to catch the Cable Car up Fjellheisen.

1745839669034.png

Passed Tromso’s iconic Arctic Cathedral before continuing the walk to get to the Cable Car

1745839684554.png

After a little wait, we reached the front of the line and headed upto the top of Fjellheisen to go and take some pictures of the great view before the weather changed in a minute of minutes.

The weather was expected to turn rapidly, so we headed off inside to the local café to grab some afternoon tea and a hot chocolate. Within minutes, we couldn’t even see outside with the snow blizzard that had enveloped us! Talk about good timing!

Once things had cleared, slowly made our way back down the mountain via the Cable Car and headed back towards Tromso taking some more pictures of the Arctic Cathedral as we passed, which unfortunately wasn’t open.

1745839739171.png

Heading back across the Bridge back into Tromso, we had no Northern Lights Tours booked for tonight (both for a night of rest, and to give the credit card a break!) so we had Dinner at Tromso’s famous Chinese Restaurant Tangs for a great feed, before heading back to the hotel to have a good sleep.

Following a night of no Northern Light Hunting, it was up and out early this morning on our day trip to the island of Senja. Arriving at the tour operator’s office, we were given a run down of the days plan and also received the explanation as to why yesterday’s tour of the Lyngen Alps was cancelled which we really appreciated.

First up, it was a drive of just over an hour to go and get the 08:30am ferry across to Senja, where we arrived at the ferry terminal to be first in line. Weather was still snowing, but we were still able to enjoy the landscapes before getting on the ferry that would take around 45mins to reach our destination of Senja.

Across the next few hours, we made countless stops as the scenery was just incredible, with the views getting better as the weather changed regularly.

First stop was some local fish drying racks – where the smell surprisingly wasn’t strong or overpowering.

After a great few hours exploring Senja, it was time to head back to catch the 2:30pm ferry to take us back to the mainland, with the trip back to Tromso taking a minor detour to stop at the well know photo spot of Ersfjord.

1746176393315.png

Got back to the hotel by 4:45pm, and went off to get something for dinner before another opportunity to hunt for the Northern Lights tonight. This was a thoroughly enjoyable tour getting away from the city and just enjoying the Nordic nature.

This time, it was mum’s turn to not feel quite well so she decided to stay at the hotel and rest whilst I headed out to see what could be seen (if anything).

What followed was a lot of driving, given the conditions were quite cloudy and this clearly stumped our tour leader who was very unsure on the best direction to head given the conditions were continuing to change rapidly. A lot of stops were done to check both the cloud cover and solar activity.

We stopped briefly in a random sidestreet (where other tours had briefly parked), where we were able to get brief glimpses of the lights.

1746176406738.png
1746176411633.png

With the clouds closing in, the decision was then made to travel toward Finland (again!) in the hope of clearer skies. We eventually stopped close to the border, and with the clouds still very evident across the sky we continued to at least get some pictures of the lights. Camp was set up with Hot Chocolate, Dinner and Biscuits.

1746176422176.png
1746176427638.png

Whilst I could see the lights, it wasn’t the show that have been seen previously – but not something you can control, and it makes what you do see even more special.

The trek back to Tromso then began, arriving back at the hotel late. Time to rest before we head to the airport in the morning and head to the next stop of Alta!

Northern Lights Scorecard: 3/4

Up early, it was time to make our way to the airport for the flights to Alta where the only activity for today was getting from A to B!

We’d originally booked the 6am flight to Alta via Oslo, arriving around 12pm however due to some schedule changes this ended up being a 10:30am flight with 7pm arrival in Alta (4hr transit in Oslo). Thankfully, we’d booked SAS Smart Plus which included Lounge Access for only a little more than the basic fare so this was well worth the changes and nil hassle in case of missing the only SAS flight to Oslo that day.

Flights went smoothly and ended up arriving into Alta a few mins later and made our way to the hotel to grab some dinner and some rest before the next activity planned tomorrow.

After a great nights sleep (all these late nights were slowly catching up on me!) at the Scandic Alta, it was time to start with the first day trip in Alta – The Snowshoeing Adventure to a Frozen Waterfall, followed in the evening by a Northern Lights Hunt via Quad Bike!

Had a great breakfast provided in the hotel, before making our way down to the meeting point at 10am to meet our guide for the day. As it turns out, we were the only 2 on tour so made for a nice private tour without the extra expense.

Conditions were still extremely icy, and had to be very careful where to step. Following a 30min car ride, we arrived at the start and got kitted out in snow gear, shoes and given techniques on how to correctly use the snow shoe. Simple in theory, but took a bit of getting used to! And then it was time to set off. The weather was extremely clear, blue sky and provided a great backdrop for the many pictures that were to be taken. We were warned that we might not be able to make the frozen waterfall due time allowed (apparently not everyone can each the waterfall in time), and this unfortunately ended up being the case with us. Whilst disappointed, we heard from a fellow hiker that the area was extremely windy and given we were taking it much slower – we had a much more enjoyable time taking in the amazing scenery that was around.

The day was absolutely magical, and the disappointment of not reaching the waterfall was sidelined in favour of great memories taking in the most amazing views – and even having mum throw a snowball at me (completely unexpected).

Following the tour, we headed back into town for a coffee before having a very quick walk around town (Alta isn’t very big) and having a break before tonights Light Hunting Tour.

1747135406207.png

At about 6:30pm, we left our rooms to meet tonight’s guide downstairs in the hotel to go Quad Biking whilst hunting the Northern Lights. Again, we ended up being the only 2 people on tour which was wonderful to hear. This proved invaluable a little later on.

Drove about 40mins to the base for the Quad Bikes, where it was time to suit up again and get dressed in snow gear, boots etc. We elected to take just one quad bike, with me driving and mum enjoying the view from the rear of the bike. Plan was to drive for about 20-30mins and see how the lights were travelling. Given I was driving, I’d planned to take any pictures we saw on my phone, with mum taking her Camera + Tripod.

Off we went on the Quad Bike, and 20 mins down the road on the top of a hill, we stopped to check the light activity. Lets just say, we didn’t move for the next 2 hours…

Firstly some of the pictures I took on my phone:

The night had the most amazing display of the Northern Lights, simply going from side to side – it was hard to know where to look at times!

We were more than satisfied around 10:30pm and slowly headed back toward the base and then driven back into town – feeling very happy with what we had just seen.

Feeling very tired, it was time to have a rest before tomorrows long journey up to the North Cape – the most northern point in mainland Europe!
