QF1 from SIN diversion to Baku, Azerbaijan (GYD)

Does anyone know what the QF A380 patterns are? Looks like they're all doing a combo of LHR and LAX - rather than having a few dedicated to LHR and a few doing LAX.

So which upcoming flights will be disrupted?

Also, what would have happened if this was a flight to LAX? Not many places to land an A380 quickly!
At this time of year especially, no matter what you do you will be robbing Peter to pay Paul to try and recover this.

Arguably Europe might be easier to get passengers on to other airlines, due to the sheer number of options but again, given the time of year, it is not that simple.

As they've only got 4 or 5 in service, a few in each direction would be a vast increase in the fleet size!

You'd get to test your faith in the cargo fire suppression system.

Hypothetical question - what would have happened if this was on the LAX route (so MEL-LAX or SYD-LAX, for example)? There's a hell of a lot of ocean and not an abundance of A380 runways every step of the way. Would the same process have happened but taken longer to find a suitable runway to land on (or turn back to)?

You can get an e-visa with a couple of days advance notice. NOT on the spot. Visas and entry most certainly have the potential to be a PITA. They have previous form with regard to this. Holding people on aircraft, or within terminal holding areas, for days, is not unknown.

'The Age'/'SMH' (quoting an anonymous passenger) state that patrons 'sat at the airport for seven hours' before they were transported to a hotel.

Passports were collected, and as the passenger opined, were 'literally taken in a duffel bag' by Azerbaijani border personnel (accompanied by a QFi representative - who would this be?) to be issued visas one by one. after approval

Similar to the experience of SQ passengers on at least one previous occasion.

The media is silent as to whether passengers are confined to their hotel, or allowed to wander and see the sights (although it being 0515 local time and dark as sunrise is not until 0800, not much point at this hour).

I’m sure they are going to get their passports back. Obviously these passengers aren’t familiar with full page printed visas still common in many countries which require you to send off your passport via registered post or for you to leave them at the embassy or consulate visa section.

Once they have visas they should be able to wander but QF will want to keep them close by… unless the visas have conditions attached.

All of the pax will have a nice souvenir in their passports if nothing else…

Just give a thought to those poor bug**rs on QF 380 stuck in Azerbaijan after planning to be in London and elsewhere for Xmas!
How long will they be there? I truly hope Qantas is doing their best for them. If planning on a Family event after years of Covid separation then it could be very distressing.

The Wilderness Village use to have bbq's on their cabin decks and I planned to cook BBQs (re last nights indulgent restaurant dinner that was wonderful) as we didnt want to eat out every night and I enjoy bbq'ing. They no longer have BBQs on their cabin decks :(

As I dont want to cook a full meal inside the cabin we dropped by the nearby caravan park and gifted porterhouse steak, chicken, veggies and some cheese and cream (I was going to make a potato bake on the bbq) to a young travelling couple. We were told this beats their steady diet of rice and noodles and they will be eating like King and Queen for the next 2 nights. 🤣

As the nearest shops are min 45mins away (and exy), Im sure they'll enjoy it.

Hubby was just asking about this and I was looking up airport hotels - to see what they would be put up in. I dont know the visa situation, ie will they be allowed to clear.

Someone like us, as long as we have a nice'sh hotel, its an adventure but for many Im sure its not as enjoyable.

In my case there was no printed visa in the passport. The whole e-visa process is electronic, and the e-visa was issued by a machine at the airport which took my money. I just got an entry stamp (after I paid and got my receipt) and an exit stamp, and had to keep the machine receipt as proof of lawful entry, not an uncommon process.

It was a bizarre COVID days process in my case though and the only way for an Australian to get in at the time. The only place I could actually get the e-visa receipt was out of the machines at the airport.

However not sure what the workaround is in the case of the stranded people. Pretty safe bet that the comment about duffle bags is exaggeration! Nice that they got to a hotel though, Azerbaijan has come a long way since Soviet times. They now promise to issue urgent visas within three hours. Their immigration people were charming, both at the border and at the State Migration Service when I registered and extended. The downside is that Azerbaijan's rules are still labyrinthine, and only some of them are on websites!
