QF1 from SIN diversion to Baku, Azerbaijan (GYD)

Good point, apparently National Express do run on Christmas day (although the network's quite limited compared to the rail network).

Not only "limited", but slow and uncomfortable compared to trains.

It's time rail unions' members agreed to the government's offer(s), imperfect as they might be. (I was there recently and among many inconvenienced by a strike). Apologies for going briefly OT.

I know when it happens to us personally it’s bad, but sometimes excrement just happens.
Over the lead up to Christmas in the US thousands of flights were cancelled … I think I read 3000 on Friday and 2000 on Saturday.

I am at the moment 5 hrs into what should have been a 4 hr journey involving a car and 2 trains . And I still have 2hrs to go. So far two cars, a bus, a train, a bus, another train and now another bus. It all started to go pear shaped when an wheel came of a trailer travelling in the opposite direction and hit us…

The LHR bound travellers have my sympathy, but It’s not the end of the world and it’s sounds like in the circumstances QF have done what they could.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

IF we were measuring 'cost' we should also take into account reputational damage and 'free' adverse media from initial reporting of an incident together with any later positive media about 'recovery', but all these are hard to measure except cost.

At a guess, the cost of sending an A380 to Baku to pick up passengers, plus the fixed one back empty from Baku to Sydney along with arranging Baku hotel accommodation, meals and transfers for around 400 people including staff, as well as in time EU 601 compensation for the delayed southbounds if anyone claims it along with extra payments to staff for longer than expected tours of duty would exceed $500,000.

Any reports on the passengers who supposedly made their own way out of Baku to LHR (not waiting for the recovery flight)??
Yes, as mentioned earlier - several were able to book onward flights thru IST etc.

Not a criticism, but I’m curious if QF rebooked any urgent / premium / status PAX? You’d think the airlines operating in/out of GYD would not have had a “Christmas” rush?

The NRT -DXB flight is 11:50hrs.
If allowed to takeoff at 00:02 crew hrs would be legal (+1:32 added to original departure time of 22:30).

However, they started disembarking at 02:30 and maybe completing at 03:00.

They finally departed at 16:02 that afternoon.

Could someone pls discuss the crew hrs implications
A bit OT now, perhaps one for the Pilots thread.

Here is the time table of QF communication with the Baku passengers.

As the plane landed at 0700 local time the 11 hours before communication seems wrong.
sadly, if I was on that flight, I would not have seen any of the SMS nor emails as I dont use my phone offshore except for iMessages, let alone use the phone for email! There’s assumptions made that people do which would be inaccurate.... however, if there was wifi available then perhaps I might have managed to connect and check emails on the laptop or iPad.

It is free to receive SMS overseas. Just make sure data is turned off.

But at 1230 they were given a letter. This was approximately 5.5 hours after landing when everyone was in the airport.

Some people don't take their devices when travelling especially on a holiday. I spend many hours a week in front a screen so ok with not taking it everywhere.

I'm on the side of CaptainJCool airlines should not make the assumption people are sitting waiting for a mass message.

Although note that the next day, they were given a "hard copy" letter, perhaps implying that the first one was via e-mail.

I'm not doubting it at all drron, and it looks very good, but what's the source for that time line?

I wonder if pax were given their luggage during the short stop in Baku?
If so I’d have been working out how to get my golf sticks and I to Dreamland golf club (walk outside and find a taxi) just south of the airport! Free stopover!

pax were given their luggage
There has not been a complaint in social media related to luggage while in Baku. So I think they would have got their luggage.

I do wonder if the passengers’ visa allowed them to stay longer than the departure of QF1D. If so I also wonder if some intrepid travellers would have taken the opportunity to visit the country.

It is in the news.com article which has been linked a couple of times. By a Qantas spokesperson.
