Hi

I have a flight booked from SYD - HND in Premium Economy (T) in a large group (20) booking.

Qantas have given me a separate booking number so I can request a points upgrade to Business which I have done.

Expert Flyer is showing the flight as almost fully booked with the following fare classes available:

J6 & C4

D,L,W,R,T,Y,B,H,K,M and L are all showing 0.

To me this looks like I would have a good chance of the upgrade being approved as the other people in the group are all on one booking reference and therefore can't request an upgrade and economy and premium economy look fully booked.

My question is as a lowly silver frequent flyer with a single passenger on my booking and flying Y+ would I be in a good position for an Op Up and therefore should cancel the upgrade request, or should I just stop being tight and stick with my 30,000 point upgrade request?

Thanks for your help. I'm a long term lurker but first time poster.

I'd say zero chance of an op-up as silver. Keep the points request in.

Edit: Welcome the forum!

If there was op-up situation, in this case would they do shuffle pax from Y to PY and PY to J or would they just send pax from Y to J meaning PY pax would miss out?

Hi Emeline

Thanks for your reply. I know normally as a Silver my chances would be zero but thought maybe the Y+ cabin situation would help.

I flew BA a few years ago and before booking Y+ read several comments regarding single travellers being upgraded to J, the consensus seemed to be that it occurred around 50% of the time.

The reason why it was such a high chance was that BA will only upgrade one travel class, so in the event of an oversold Y cabin people were moved to Y+ and given that there were only approx 32 seats in Y+ a single traveller stood a good chance of receiving this op up. In my cars I flew LAS - LHR and LHR - YVZ and was upgraded on the second leg.

I thought maybe that it might be a similar situation with Qantas.

The flight is QF 25 on 18/3/16 SYD - HND.

See what others think, but I wouldn't be risking it. I've never had an op-up with QF, some others have been lucky though. You're still 48-72 hours out so don't forget the WP and SG ahead of you who will have points upgrades in. Those will start to clear around T-48 for WP and T-24 for SG.

I would stick with the points upgrade request. You can also select the option to request an upgrade right up to the gate.

Thanks for your help.

I will stick with my points upgrade request.

I guess it all comes down to whether cabin or status is more important when determining upgrades.

Looking at Expert Flyer the flight looks absolutely chockers apart from 4 J class seats. I would say op-ups would be extremely unlikely on this flight, even if you were WP as it's highly likely than more than 4 pax would have points upgrade requests in.

op-ups are assigned on the basis of your commercial value to QF (ie total spend) should any cabins be oversold they will move people up in that order

That would depend on who was in premium economy and whether higher value customers are in economy. It's quite possible for Platinum and above to go from economy to business more so for last minute op-ups.

I am not an expert but they could be hesitant in upgrading part of a group.

I got a dom MEL - ADL op up once, didn't know I got it till I got to the gate and saw 2A!
Was 7F!
The plane in Y was full of school kids, so maybe they wanted to get rid of a single male travelling alone.
But thats as an SG.
And J had empty seats on that flight, so they don't just send everyone up to the pointy end.
Stick with the spend of 30k points.
If you make it, then you are the lucky one in the lot.
You will get to try SYD int J lounge too.

Hi everyone thanks for your help with this.

Unfortunately my upgrade request was not approved, but two other people on the group got an op up.

i did however get a points upgrade on the return leg on the old four class 747, after a lot of effort got a seat in row 4 of the old first class. Nice seat certainly much better than the business seat on this plane but not a big improvement on new gen business class in my opinion.

The upgrade came through 36 hours before which is at odds with normal Silver upgrade process.
