QF trials new "no tray" meal service in Economy Class

Airport food is so expensive. Where did I see a sandwich for $8-$9 or was it more.

I'd hazard a guess that's about what the food component is that has been priced into your airfare. Give or take depending on route/time/food product.

So you would have a cheaper airfare with choice of food on ground/in-air/no food. The whole point of unbundled (in the eyes of most:LCC) airfares.

It would be heaps better than the terrible packs we are served on QantasLink flights containing a dry chorizo & cheese muffin, bag of apple slices , and a single crispello chocolate!

Same pack containing the same things almost every time[/QUOTE

sinple.....fly another airline on that route....

I could do that, VA started on this route approx. 1 year ago, but I choose to fly Qantas.

I only wished to add input to the thread based on my experiences and am by no means "Qantas-bashing".

But, I figure considering the normal cost of flights on this route compared with say BNE - SYD or MEL etc, even a fresh packaged sandwich would be nicer than the fare on offer.

No I am not a FIFO worker.

There's actually a difference.
6pm or 7pm flight most will want something a bit more substantial as its too early for dinner pre-departure, too late for dinner on arrival.
3pm or 4pm it's less important and a snack (or indeed nothing) is what most people want.
Now there's also an argument that with decent food options in the airport, or lounge, then "significant" food (meal) is not really necessary.

Agree with this. I also don't want to have to arrive at an airport early to get food - the whole point of it being on the plane is to maximise time & efficiency. I want to spend the minimum amount of time in the airport possible.

Sydney Airport is just as bad - have had a ham and cheese croissant and an orange juice at a café near the escalators up to the QF lounge before - $12 or so. Food at every airport is very expensive.

On the original topic, I was just on QF1 and I had a look at one of the economy meals and it appeared as if individual elements were being served including roll and all of the usual Y fare. To be honest, I don't require some huge fuss on a flight from SYD-MEL. I just won't eat, I miss the wasabi peas though.... I'll have a coffee/ glass of wine. Geez, it's just an hour and a half, if not a little bit more. We can probably do without the additional fats

Neil Perry should take a trip on the Japanese rail system and see how boxed ( bento ) meals are done. They include your multiple "courses" and are a breeze to distribute and collect.

More than that when you factor in check-in and be-at-the-gate deadlines.

Tighter for QFi than QFd. But still ...

QF needs to factor in the demands they make on their passengers.

Dinner on QF 459 from SYD to MEL this evening (Christmas eve) in Y was a quinoa salad with roast beef. The meal was fresh and quite tasty (better than the TV dinners served usually) and relatively filling. We were also given a star shaped chocolate as a dessert.

To be honest that actually looks much better than some of the older hot meals. But does need something else

I had this a couple of days ago SYD-DRW. It tasted extremely salty to me.

Had the same thing on QF546 from SYD to BNE yesterday evening. I really liked it. Slightly on the salty side but I didn't mind that. I found that not having a tray made the eating process more fiddly.

Whilst it maybe a tad salty, the amber beverage did help to tone down the saltiness. I did have a read of the nutrition label and IIRC, the sodium content was quite low (~350mg per serve which I think was about 250g) so it was not as bad as I thought. Judging by the number of people that had the same meal, I am guessing this is the cold dinner served ex-SYD during this Xmas/NY period.

Curious to see what is on return flight from MEL next Wednesday...

My mate flew with Qantas yesterday. He had chicken and potato salad in a clear plastic box.

I had the chicken and roast veggie salad yesterday as well, MEL-ADL, and I quite liked it. Small, but after a nibble in the lounge and one side of the family's xmas lunch earlier in the day, it was all I really needed.

Tonight's (1 Jan) dinner on QF 490 from MEL to SYD - Pasta salad with chicken and a mustard dressing. It was tasty and filling (also with more chicken pieces than some J class meals ;)).

As an aside, the load was very low with only 1 person in J and about 100 in Y on a 763.

That thing looks great for Y. So sick of the asparagus chicken salad in J.
However I don't approve the lack of tray with little choc and bread roll.

nb - I'm based in CBR so this looks like F to me. All we ever get is a sanga.... on a good day. (bad day = tuna sanga)
