QF trials new "no tray" meal service in Economy Class

domestic wise....why should QF provide FREE soft drinks/juices..fresh apples/hot meals/snacks and OMG trays!!! lol... on flights under 2.5hrs to ALL pax...when the 'premium full service' VA doesnt.. it's the typical australian tall poppy syndrome..when someone is on the top...we must beat them down and support the underdog...then..be careful what you wish for...as the underdog raises to the top...hmmmmm...the same cycle begins and VA will become the 'bad guy'!!! (currently my 'meal' options throughout the day/night on VA comprise of 'lollies/chips/maybe a sanger...if you pay!!!

qantas must provide it because they advertise it.

and to be honest, if they didn't, I wouldn't fly with them at all. it's what differentiates them from their competitors.

Spoke to a CSM on one of my flights today and it appears that the trial on QF1 does not see any components that one might expect of an economy meal being dropped it is quite simpley all things are served in a box that makes it quicker and easier. Time will tell :D

I concur - its the contents that matter, not box v tray.

I don't mind the box and if it saves time and money (? and weight) then good for QF. The problem in 2002 was the contents, not the box itself.

i'd be ok with a large box with all the components that come on a tray in international economy.

Buckwheat & lentil salad with roast beef on BNE-MEL tonight.
I enjoyed the salad, it's a nice entree, definitely not enough for dinner.

A quote from the Q Catering website. (A Qantas Group company)

"Share in our passion for perfection

A meal in the air – it's the focus of the flight, the hallmark of service, the benchmark by which you are remembered and compared. And now you have the opportunity to put the ultimate expertise behind it: Q Catering."

Oh I almost forgot - :D

Not bad for a 50 minute flight. The only trouble with no tray is that recycling is harder if not non-existent.
Is that a muffin? If it is some of those muffins have ~400-500 calories which cannot be a good thing. Especially when one has 2 of them!

Lavosh, cheese, rice crackers, salami (which I didn't eat), water and a chocolate.

No muffins :(

Edit: Oh, and 2 very generous glasses of white wine. :)

Hmm. Rice crackers, fatty fermented pig remnants and water. Very impressive. Good call on the pig.

Breakfast this morning on SYD-OOL was the Yoghurt tub (with passionfruit) and a muffin, though today it was served on the half-size tray, with an orange juice and usual red coffee cup. I'm a bit confused now where and when you do/don't get a tray.

It seems the half trays are used for flights that are double catered (for both the outbound and inbound segments). OOL and HBA comes to mind as there are no QF catering provisions in those cities (maybe also some intra-WA flights as well). I flew from OOL to SYD in mid November and was pleasantly surprised when I was served a hot dinner (minus the bread roll) in those half-trays on the 17:40 departure where I was expecting just some cheese and crackers.

are non-alcoholic drinks limited or can you ask for as many as you need for the journey? Always wanted to know... I have never asked them for another.

I've often asked for another water, and they've always obliged!
