Qantas pilots turn to iPads in a move designed to improve communication

QANTAS will deploy 2200 iPads to its pilots in a move designed to improve communication and data access while cutting down on coughpit paper.

The 64Gb iPads with 3G connectivity are also expected to provide about $1.5 million in annual savings through a combination of reduced printing and distribution costs as well as weight saving of about 20kg per aircraft.

It would be great to see his response to the company supplied one versing the one he has supplied at his own expense and also set it up as well to the way he likes it.

Keep in mind the coughpit is at the end of the wires, not in the middle where induction would be the greatest, short answer, no change!

It never takes long for it to appear.

There are other factors aside from electrical devices. There is paying attention during take off and landing as well as objects that can potentially become missiles if unsecured.

3G connectivity to what? To 3G terrestrial base stations or a to a pico-cell on board? I suspect the former which means it's only going to be an "on the ground" device. Probably just, as they suggest, a paper work saver.

If it's to an on board pico-cell then 100-200 units on will make no difference.

Won't be on board as there is no approval for it in Australia.

Even jb747 is not too sure how it will all be done (and it might be wifi, not 3G) but it does look like it will be a good improvement!
