QF to cut jobs/routes

OK so QF is closing it catering station in ADL from MAR 2013. What will happen with catering for flight from ADL?

Surely they wouldn't fly food in to ADL for flights from ADL?

Would they sell ADL catering to a private firm?

Probably subcontract it to Gate-gourmet or similar, or just load the cup cakes at the prior port!

China Southern recently commenced services, Qatar commence services in July.

Emirates have increased their frequency into PER from DBX. Etihad have also indicated it will be their next AU destination and have applied for more weekly flight rights to AU.

Despite the hype/rumours, the announcement is a bit of a fizzer!

Gee I wouldn't like to see what you call a big announcement.

500 Jobs gone.

I would hate to be one of the staff telling there families I know longer have a job.

Tell someone who cares Xenophon......oh thats right, you don't run a business and get a pension for life.

Actually, he does/did run a business. And I'm pretty sure there is no pension for life for him as he entered the senate after the defined benefit scheme was closed to new members.

The staff I feel sorry for are the catering staff - they had nothing to do with the industrial action and they are unfortunate victims.

As for the rest, well thier unions caused the problems so I have no sympathy. Reduced flying doesn't require paying crews to do no flying.

Interesting to note only 19.5k of epiqure members, given the recent freebies I find that very low!

Sorry I have no respect for Xenophan, here he is running a senate hearing for the Qantas sale act, and he stumbled and fumbled through the hearing. Couldn't even get aircraft right. If you are going to run that, learn a bit about it.

His presses just proves he doesn't like Alan Joycemone bit.

Also interesting to see most of the posts on the news sites are supporting the moves...

Really? Most of the time those comments are a chance for people to express how much Qantas suck (usually in terms of in the air experiences, high prices, faulty aircraft or old crackpot FAs)

Yup.. Most were bagging the union for their actions.. It was very pro Qantas.

If you took the time to read the speech you would see the issue in Adelaide is the lease Qcatering has on their building is coming to an end and the building is being demolished as part of general redevelopment. That leaves Qantas with two options, build a new facility or contract it out as they do at many domstic ports in Australia and clearly o/s. The speech makes it clear they don't want to build a new facility, so that leaves contracting it out.

I have compiled an analysis of the route changes here: davidkeating.wordpress.com/2012/02/16/qantas-cuts-india-and-auckland-to-la/

Little surprise on the SIN-BOM route, as it was fairly low-yielding and there is a lot of (loss-making) competition on the route with aggressive pricing.

I recall figures being quoted that showed demand for LAX-JFK had dropped due to the GFC. But recently demand on that route has become quite strong again. Hence it would make sense to now return the bigger airrcaft to that sector.

So not contradictory at all - just a reflection of changing market conditions.

Is there anywhere that the general public can access these figures? Other thank the Australian Government passenger numbers, there seems to be very little hard data out there on routes/network planning for the general public.

From what I can see, LAX-JFK reverting to B747 will add a lot of additional capacity on the route. QF only operated JFK as a daily service from 2007 onwards, where the following conditions were different (and more favourable)
1. LAX feed was higher than it is today (5x daily)
2. The GFC, and heavy trans-Pacific competition, had not kicked in yet

During 2010, with greater feed at LAX than today, Qantas only operated JFK as a 5x weekly A332. The pessimist in me thinks that it might revert to that with the B747 before too long. I hope I'm wrong.

Ok. Over the last couple of years, CX has increased from 4 flights a week up to 10 flights a week currently. TG is increasing capacity shortly (and reintroducing HKT flights).

Interesting. My parents had flights booked on TG via BKK for my wedding in April. Coming home the only availability was BKK-HKT-PER, but it looks like that has now disappeared and they instead have BKK-PER direct. As it turns out it needs to be changed now to add a few extra days in BKK and the main options I'm given now are BKK-SIN-PER on SQ (772)

Re: QANTAS Cutting routes - what happens to those already booked?

The airline will rebook you on an alternative in the coming days I assume - they will contact you to discuss the options. Not sure what they would go if you were going to Mumbai - if you were on the AKLLAX flights, you would be rerouted via AUS, either direct with MEL or via BNE or SYD. Changes won't happen till May - give them time to sort out what they will do and they will take care of it. You would be wasting your time contacting them today, wait until next week if you havent heard anything

Selfishly I'm stoked about the boost to the LAX to NY flights! Do that route a lot and have missed the 747.

I'm on a SYD>BKK J flight in September and it's still coming up as a 747 in the seatmap. When I do a dummy new booking it still comes up as all 747s too. I had Row 16 exit seats selected too so want to get in early when they update the site.

For those that have been through this before, how long does it normally take them to update this stuff online and should I expect a phone call or just have to keep checking the site in the hope of first-in first-served?

A couple of weeks max based on the last changes put in place, which were more extensive. Try looking at getting the same row now as an exit row on an A332, they may transition across seemlessly.
