Hi all. So I finally got a status challenge from QF - 200 SCs on QF marketed flights within 90 days to get Gold. Just wondering if anyone has prior experience with this, who might know the answers to the following questions:

1. Am I correct to assume that I would be granted Gold status as soon as I reach 200 SCs, or is it a case of waiting until the end of the 90 day period and then waiting for a manual review to take place?

2. If I gain Gold status via the challenge, how long is Gold status valid for? My 90 day period straddles two membership years, so it's possible I will attain Gold either just before or just after the end of my current membership year (depending on the answer to Q1). Would my new status be valid for the current membership year plus one year, as would be the case under normal circumstances?

TIA.

Very cool!

1. I think it took a couple of weeks for the status change to come through but yes if you hit it before the 90 days is up you'll get it before then. I did make a couple of phone calls though to chase it up as soon as the flights hit my account.

2. I got the status for the remainder of my membership year, not into the following year but it was early in my year and I still had to meet the lowered threshold to retain (eg gold should be 600 sc to retain gold for the following year and platinum 1200 sc) for the following year.

I was able to choose the period I wanted the status challenge to begin and I had 2 medium haul trips within a month so chose it to start the day before the first flight.
Maybe you should call and clarify how you would be affected so you can make the right choice.

Double sc promo's or acquire etc don't count. It's just pure regular sc flying.

Ok, so this is what I'm worried about. When I hit 200 SCs, I might literally have a couple of weeks of my membership year remaining. I'm hoping they apply some discretion? Otherwise, the challenge is not worth doing in my circumstances.

Yeah I had the same option but I've already started it (last week, and have 40 SCs so far). I didn't think about this issue until now. I think I will give them a call, thanks.

I'll be doing one of these hopefully at some point, the 200 SCs can be gotten on another airline can they, doesn't have to be with Qantas?

I'd call them. I think they'd be fairly sensible especially if you only had 2 wks left on your membership year as it's unlikely people are going to do a runner to get the remaining 200 or however many sc just to get gold for the following year but obviously that ball is in their court. Or ask them what happens if you stretch it out and finish just after your membership rolls over if you get gold for the rest of that year. I'm an optimist... call and I hope it works out for you.

I flew EK operated QF ticketed and it counted. But I think if I had bought an EK ticket then I would only earn QF points and not sc earn so you'd need to check the particular partner and how its ticketed on the Qantas partner earning tables.

Yeah, I was more leaning towards one of the other One World airlines which should mostly all earn SCs with QF, if perhaps a reduced rate, but just gives more options....

Will ask them to match my AA ExP that lasts till Feb...

Sorry, it's definitely limited to QF marketed flights only - "Qantas marketed flights (booked and ticketed on QF flight numbers)" per the email I got. So, for example, I have some flights booked with BA coming up (booked as BA flight numbers), and they were very clear about the fact that those flights will not count towards the challenge.

Anyway, I called QF and they told me that in my case, my new status would be valid until the end of my 2017 membership year, so panic averted!

Looked at like discount economy PER-SYD-LAX return and didn't add up to 200 SCs i don't think, so not necessarily that much of a breeze...

Same PER-DXB-LHR return....

Jack3193 is in Melbourne isn't he? A return trip Melbourne to Cairns Flex Y gives you 100 SC and can be done in a day. With 3 months warning and if you have a few points to throw in you can choose the cheapest with time to spare.

Coming out of Perth is a problem simply because not enough compitition on the fare front, if I need a status run try to find a QF flight on a tourist route with a LCC (I include Virgin in that :D) as competition to keep the prices in check.

How does one get offered this challenge, purely random or can you request it?

I asked for a status match - got declined:p but offered a challenge instead. I sent in a photo of my main FFP status card and I think 6 months of my activity statement and it should be of a competitor's airline. Did a little cover story. The rest is up to Qantas as to whether they offer it or not. I think it's to the qantas frequent flyer email address [email protected].

Yep, basically same deal with me. Maybe worth noting that I hold both Velocity Platinum and KrisFlyer Gold, yet they still only offered me a Gold challenge. Anyway, I was ok with that, as I believe they would have wanted 400 SCs in 90 days for Platinum, and that might have been a bit difficult - depending on flying patterns, which in my case are unpredictable at the best of times.

Matt - thanks for the tip, I'll bear that in mind if I'm short of SCs. I may or may not have a work trip to Asia next month - if that happens, and if I can manage to book QF flights, I'll get there easily. If not I may need to go the status run route!

Do you get the perks of gold (lounge entry, etc.) while working towards the 200sc challenge?

No. Only after its completed and processed which may have taken a couple of weeks? ie you don't have to wait the entire 90 days for it to kick in, it will start sooner if completed earlier.
