QF PER-SIN to go double daily, Jetstar no more

With MAS a few years ago reducing services from KUL to MEL & SYD , and eliminating BNE altogether, KUL appears to have be a tough destination presently.

I wonder what precipitated those service reductions?

From memory MH engaged in some outstanding (in the literal sense of the word) decision-making in 2013, which included increasing frequency to triple daily for both SYD and MEL, prior to the events of 2014. This was seemingly a hail mary shot at trying to stave off the inevitable following years of mounting losses that started before the two tragedies.

At least for MH the reduction in services was more a combination of reversing unsustainable frequency plus further mandatory rationalisation (with BNE losing out) brought about by their technical collapse in 2014.

Their actions wouldn't necessarily signal broader issues with the market, though perhaps the actions of other airlines may.

AFAIK AirAsia are pushing out a reduced schedule in Australia.

QF used to fly to KUL a few years ago when I worked in res, but I understand it was a real money loser. I think BA pulled out of KUL not long after and, as someone else mentioned, JQ couldn't make it work. Also AY announced it as a destination a few years ago and it literally never got off the ground. I guess Malaysia isn't as a big a tourist drawcard in itself as some if its neighbors to warrant direct services and the economy not strong enough to sustain many direct long haul flights (in addition to MH).

Actually BA are back with a daily service. Also, perhaps surprisingly Malaysia has the third ranking (behind China and Thailand) for international tourist arrivals in Asia. Although not completely relevant to QF/JQ operations as there are a lot of tourist arrivals from middle eastern countries, that aren’t as numerous in nearby countries.

Oh right! Now that I think about it, I think I did hear about the BA return. Thanks for the update. For some reason it still seems to be a pretty tough market for non - Asian carriers to make work.

BA used to Fly LHR-xKUL-SYD and return.

When the SYD tags were in their death throws I purchased a sale fare MEL-xSYD-KUL return on BA* for $400.

*MEL/SYD were on BA*QF codeshares - it was strange getting only 110 QFF points for travel on QF metal ...
