I know I am only a budget traveller but I thought I would look at PE for an upcoming trip from LHR to Sydney. I was a bit dismayed at the prices on offer. £2100 for a trip in Feb (I know it is peak into Sydney). On todays FX that is a cost of $4600. I could not believe it. From what I hear QF has very light loads in PE so are they pricing themselves out of the market? Not that there is a huge market in PE but when CX are offering Business fares for £2700 for the same time I would find it hard to justify spending £2100 for PE.

By the way, my economy fares, came in at £975. So double the price for PE.

Would appreciate the erstwhile views of board members.

It's a question of value but given the CX pricing you quote I know what I'd be flying!

At the risk of being flamed again and coming from someone who grew to be fond of BA WT+ at the old pricing structure Qantas premium economy is totally and utterly overpriced. There is no way in a pink fit I would pay more than double the price of WHY for a couple of extra inches legroom in QF premium economy. Please BA bring back the old pricing for WT+. Again your YMMV....

PE is priced at a premium to Full Y.
Fares you are comparing are Discounted Y.

There is just not much discounting of PE / J / F fares.
Discounts are normally hidden in buy 1, get 1, or the current BA buy J return, get one F leg etc..

OK I'm going to flame away :-|. Not really.

Technically, I disagree with you that the QF Y+ product is overpriced. By definition QF are selling it for the price they think the market will bear. If people are willing to pay that price, then it is clearly not overpriced. Also bear in mind corporate policies that forbid J travel but may allow Y+.

Personally, I wouldn't pay that sort of money to fly Y+ on QF so in that sense I do think it is way overpriced. Doesn't seem to make sense, particularly if J is available for not that much more. But we all know that many consumers aren't perhaps as well informed as those that frequent websites such as these and probably wouldn't even think that they could get J on other airlines for a similar price.

The problem is that before Qantas introduced Y+, WT+ fares on BA Oz-Asia return could be had for around $1500 - this was only a year ago.

Not any more ... now looking at around $2600 for BA10/9 for SYD/BKK in Feb.

I actually also disagree, while I think BA WTP is completely overpriced for the substandard product they're offering, QF Y+ has been very week received by our corporate clients who are QF loyal and don't want to make the jump from there to 11k+ to fly J to Europe, so for that market (which I dare say they're aiming at), it's perfect.

I wouldn't have a problem paying $4500+ for QF Y+, sure from time to time you can get one world specials on J, but you're only talking about a special thats available from time to time, not consistently.
