Been with QF that many years I cant remember, been silver a number of years but we never make it to GOLD, this year " the other half" will be about 100 sc short the same as last year , me about 130 short, if we shifted over to VA would it be be to our benefit as you dont need as many SC, and what would the pros V the cons be? we usually make a BIG trip once a year in PE and the other trips interstate and say Singapore , Look forward to your input.

Family Pooling will be your friend at VA :)

I thought you couldn't transfer SCs

You can't transfer SC's. You can have SC's & points from a family member living with you "pool" to you when they fly or vv. Added to what you have accrued, you wil be Gold in no time at all.

Virgin is a totally different carrier and the grass is not as green as it looks and sounds even with status.

YMMV.

It's a bit hard to answer what status you could get on VA. While the qualification requirement is lower, the earning is also different on the slightly lower side. Family pooling is a great benefit. Also worth remembering that the cheapest economy tickets are no frills tickets on domestic flights.

Sounds like the SC you'd earn would enable you both to earn and retain Gold even without family pooling, which would mean you get lounge access.

Personally, made the switch recently after 10+ years as QF Gold for any number of reasons and haven't looked back.

i've been to Virgin and now back with QF.

it would depend on your flying and destinations, you might be gold with virgin but there are negatives that come with that.

There are many other factors to consider obviously. I found VA cheaper for the international and domestic flights I wanted and after significant delays with 3 consecutive international flights with Jetstar, I swore off them. Family pooling and this brilliant site, has helped me reach Silver, Gold & Platinum all since August last year. Subsequently, I have enjoyed the offerings of the lounge, priority boarding, fly ahead, complimentary upgrades to J, preferential seating, baggage benefits etc.

I can't compare these benefits against QF as I have never held status with them.

You really need to read through as many threads on this site as you can to determine which FF program is going to be more beneficial to you. It may well be that all you need to do is purchase QP access depending on what you are seeking.

I tried a few VA flights a while ago changing it up with QF. I am now fully back to QF. VA will generally only be considered as an option if QF don't offer a direct service and only if QF timings are inconvenient -- most recently that has been MEL-OOL.

I hold status with both and they both have their pros and cons. I've been very happy with both, so I continue to split my loyalty between the two depending on which one suits me at the time. I don't feel pressured to use one over the other. I still have a choice. For the OP, I would suggest giving VA a go with family pooling so that you can reach gold and, whatever you have left, it may be worth maintaining silver with QF or even aiming for plat with VA.
