I read an old closed thread about a reward redemption to POM and there was mention of funny routings to get a better deal.

I just did a search BNE-POM in Y on a classic reward and it gave 36000 points return and a card payment of $227.60. This sounds high to me, but would that be correct? If so, I may as well just buy the fares outright and earn points.

Would buying AA points be a better option?

36,000 QF points + $227.60 for BNE-POM return is correct for BNE-POM on Qantas metal.

It's worth noting that you can also use QF points to fly Air Niugini, including BNE-POM and also CNS-POM. BNE-POM would be the same price (though taxes would be different). CNS-POM should cost only 16,000 points return. I don't know whether PX add on any fuel surcharges but I suspect not. You'd have to call QF to check availability and book as it can't be done on the QF website.

AA miles could be another option, but after the devaluation earlier this year the value isn't quite as good any more. AA want 30,000 miles + US$153.40 for a return trip. Where AA miles could come in handy, though, is if you wanted to tack on a trip to Perth, Darwin, Broome or even New Zealand (for example) as it would be the same price from POM to anywhere in Australia/NZ. PER-BNE-POM also costs 30,000 AA miles + US$174.40 return in Y. AKL-BNE-POM is 30,000 AA miles + US$126.60 return.

(As an aside, I'd love to know how the taxes for AKL-BNE-POM are lower than BNE-POM!)

Thanks. I only ask as we intend to do a number of touristy things in PNG and I was thinking of the points to get my wife and daughter there. I might re-evaluate that idea and perhaps buy the fares and use the points to upgrade.
