QF/Oneworld Observations...

Assuming you had CX gold = One World Sapphire, then that is really a comparison with Star Silver (Although you actually have star gold with NZ), which IMO gets you not much at all.

The second tier with OW is better than equivalent in star given lounge access....

If you had CX diamond (emerald) then first check in and lounges may have made a nice impression on you..... first lounges would not be accessible with star gold.

But thanks for the report, was not good to hear about the A380 being in poor condition.

Actually I beg to differ. When I was NZ Gold (which is Star Gold) you get top tier (gold) benefits across the Star Alliance. When you climb up to Gold Elite at NZ you remain on Star Gold so there is little change. Never mind I declare that the benefits are significantly better (and importantly much more consistent) across Star Alliance.

Ooh Roo...

Willie..

I have done the F lounging etc and yes The Wing at HKG with their a la carte menu but

Some airlines choose to provide it anyway. Certainly I have never flown CX without having priority baggage (holding QF status), and IIRC when I flew LAN a few years ago had priority tags as well.

This is the problem... you would sort of think that the benefits would apply across the entire alliance... But not at Oneworld which is just some bad planning on someones part. And yes the tags do pop on to the suitcases every now and then but the good favours can turn in to expectations and so on...

Surely same benefits across the alliance would be the way to go??? Make it easier for everyone! Particularly the counter dragons!

Anyway it is no deal breaker... I am happy with Star Alliance at the moment...

And I am happy with both GE and QF WP.

GE means I get confirmed "Standby Upgrades" on long haul flights and will have basic elite ennies when travelling DJ/VA.

QF WP maeans much of my OZ travel is rather comfortable thankyou.

Goingback to the OP

- you indicated the 388 that transported you to HKG was 'not cleaned properly - have you contacted qantas regarding such.

- I agree the 773 IFE is better than the IFE in the QF 388's but I will post that the QF 388 IFE is better than on any other NZ aircraft that is not a 773. With Qantas the IFE is on the recently refurbished 744's and the newer 73H's is better as well.

OW sapphire is not equivalent to star silver, it tends to be equivalent to star gold, in many ways, including similar qualification requirements. OW Ruby is more like Star silver. If anything if you are with Aegean Airlines OW Ruby = Star Gold , but that's an anomaly :p

Star alliance has only two tiers, but must individual airlines have non-alliance top tiers.

OW Ruby = Star Silver
OW Sapphire = Star Gold
OW Emerald has no match, but many airlines have a similar elite tier that gives benefits only on that airline (and its subsidiaries), eg NZ Gold Elite, UA 1K, SQ PPS etc). One could argue these are equivalent to QF Platinum One, but probably doesn't have quite so high a bar as that.

Can you tell me what this 'Ohh Roo' thing is on every post?

I'll poke my bib in here, and at the risk of getting it totally wrong I believe it is actually "Ooh Roo", as opposed to "Ohh Roo", and is a moderately common term for "good bye". I think. :) Possibly part of Willie's signature.

-HI All

There were 145 passengers in total on the flight!

145 PAX in whY on an A380 ..not even half full in whY !!! and most @ $380 . That sounds like a profitable flight ...NOT ! I think QF would be hoping to get better loads than that moving forward , otherwise it will be adios A380 for SYD-HKG.

No it won't necessarily mean adios A380 SYD-HKG. All they would need to do is repaint the tail with a star on it, take out the J/F class seats and replace with Y seats and sell them for an extra $100 simply because they must be the cheapest (because they have a star on the tail). With the remaining Y+ seats sell them as Business ...;)

Um, has anybody ever noticed whether those "Priority" tags make any difference to arrival on the carousel? I haven't noticed any change to the random chance that rules my bags. If anything, I'd expect them to make things slower as they would act as a marker that premium passenger may mean premium valuables.

Not in my case, unfortunately, unless you are big on paperbacks and Starbucks souvenir mugs.

But still, I wouldn't be inclined to make a fuss over whether my bags had priority tags or not. So long as they show up on the carousel...

OW priority tags work everywhere but Australia. They are obviously a red rag to a bull consigning them to near last to come out.
VA on the other hand do domestic priority tags properly-they do come out in the first few.

Totally concur, my QF tags mean they are always the last to come out, priority schmiority.......
Incidentally, whenever I check in my bags it takes 2 or 3 tries to get the tag reader to recognise the tag, I usually have to perform bag voodoo by placing it at an obscure angle to get it to work.
I was thinking that's why my bags always come out near last because inside the luggage system they don't get read and get put up the back, but then I realised that it happens to everyone........

From what I understand at large airports the priority tags don't mean a lot. As airports with computerised baggage systems will sort the bags based on the information on the barcode. So your bag may well have a priority tag on it but still end up in a normal container.

Also on a full A380 about a quarter of passengers will have priority baggage through the class they are travelling in. Combined with economy passengers who have status you may well be getting up to half the passengers on the plane being eligible for priority baggage. So even if priority baggage is working as designed, you may still have a fair wait.

What I have long tried to figure out is who rips the priority tags off. Nearly all my international flights end with the priority tag having been ripped off.

The baggage handler wearing the animal costume of course, that way he knows which bags he has checked for goodies!
