Has anyone else seen the segment of the Welcome Aboard video where Australia's version of Carol Vorderman, one Deborah Hutton is seen spruking QF's upcoming initative encouraging passengers to separate their cans, cups etc for recycling.

No real detail in the video at all, and nothing in a quick google on it either.

Will they at least fit the rubbish cart out with basketball hoops so I can go for a rim shot from the window seat.

Haven't seen that video but I don't think it's so much a Qantas initiative, more likely they've decided to follow the lead of their US counterparts.

Just got back a week ago from the US and travelled on quite a few different carriers many of whom ask pax on descent to hand in any unwanted newspapers and magazines for recycling along with service items.

The US seems to be a few paces ahead of us Antipodeans when it comes to the recycling bandwagon in general.

Cheers
Oz

I believe that Qantas has been sorting and recycling items from in-flight rubbish for a while. Not really sure how it works, but assume that rubbish (at least from domestic flights) is laid out on a table (or a conveyor belt) somewhere and workers pick through what is easily recycled.

For overseas flights, I think it's different. IIRC, 747's etc have garbage compactors onboard for general rubbish, although keeping in mind that the Economy meals are re-racked onto the trolleys at the end of service, there is some scope their for later checking and reclamation of recyclables.

Australia is ahead of some countries in recycling, and behind others. Certainly things like street collection of recyclables isn't matched in many U.S states, but plastic bags are better recycled in many countries. I think the EU is probably the leader overall with recycling...

It's definitely been done on board domestic flights for a while. In fact they have a tedious corporate video regarding their green credentials posted on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=py2v0wSkWs4

I can't be coughd to watch it again but I remember they specifically mentioned their catering, QP recycling and had a shot of the cleaning crew somewhere in there.

My theory was the cleaning crew would pre-sort somewhat. eg. newspapers into one bag, cans into another. The US carriers sound more like a JetStar "please be nice and clean the cabin" ie. "you're cheap and so are we. we don't employ cleaning crews"

SK was separating used plastic "glasses" from general rubbish over 10 years ago. QF starting to do it now is hardly an initiative.

I can shed some light on the new recycling methods onboard.

It will apply to bulk loaded domestic flights (basically services where you don't get a tray). A new recycling bag will replace the current traymat. The new Qmat is grey and made from lined, food-grade paper to prevent any leaks. The new Qmat doesn't contain sugar or stirrers also to help minimize waste, but are still available from the crew if your having tea or coffee.

After the service instructions on the Qmat will tell you what to do with your rubbish. Cans, cups and bottles are handed to the crew with any other rubbish to be put inside the Qmat. The carts the crew will use are now split into green for recyclable and red for waste rubbish bags with the green bags taken away to be recycled.

Don't forget to that your newspapers can be recycled in the terminal in specially provided paper bins!

Thanks for the info. First to see these, grab a pic to see how it works.

I was thinking this just yesterday how so much stuff is thrust upon you while flying such as the plastic cup when they give you a can or bottle, by the time you've said you don't need a cup they've moved on. Then there's that wasteful waste bag they throw at you as well. Never used it before yesterday when I thought they weren't going to get the clean up done before landing. Seeing as they've cut the food back to a bare minimum they can cut the waste back too.

As for the USA I've never seen so much waste, not so much with airlines but how many hotels in the budget range have their breakfasts provided with throw out plastic cups and plates and cutlery to save on cleaning? Not to mention wasted food from buffets but that's another story.

Guess they finally realised that the container refund in south oz has gone up 100%. As long as qantas buy all their drinks containers in south australia they are entitiled to collect the deposit. ;) :D

Aah, so it's money saving by Qantas. They keep their green tinge, but force the onus of recycling onto the customer (eg, they don't have to pay people to sort through rubbish looking for recyclables!).

For those interested, there's a bit of a blurb here:
Qantas? Domestic Onboard Recycling Program

And a photo of the new bags here: http://www.qantas.com.au/img/760x145/img_recycling_page760x235.jpg

Bags on my flights today (SYD-BNE, BNE-TSV) - not that much that can be recycled anyway - only the obvious cans and bottles and perhaps the unnecessary plastic cups. Not sure if the tea/coffee cups can be.
The bag itself seems completely unrecyclable - some plastic lined papery thing.

Green initiatives are often only carried out by companies when it saves them money. Look at the hotels with the "I'll use it again" with the towels.

I am not a paid cleaner for Qantas and have no intention of sorting the cough out.

The whole lot can be stomped into the floor for all I care.

Let them pay janitors to sort through their cough rather than insult their passengers further.

So hardya you dont recycle at home then given that you arent a paid garbage collector?

Flying MEL-CBR on the weekend and it was announced at the start of the meal service that they would not be serving tea or coffee on the flight because the new recycling program means it takes longer for the FAs to clean up at the end and thus there was no time to serve tea/coffee. And then when they came around to collect our rubbish the FA said to me that the incorrect bags had been loaded on to the flight so they wouldn't be recycling anything anyway!!

Maybe recycling is thus just another "enhancement" that is a convenient excuse for reduced service?

Gotta say that's pretty poor form. Getting a cup of (relatively decent) tea is one of the few nice things left about flying QF domestic in Y - I hope this isn't a "service enhancement" that's here to stay. :(

Um... are you for real...?

Hopefully Qantas recycles your attitude towards the environment by mistake :D:p

I think this crew member may have read the memo wrong - there was a change to MEL-CBR service. Tea and coffee no longer has to be on the cart but is available on request. Tea and coffee is certainly still offered.

Interesting - that might be the case. However, I will add that I flew MEL-CBR 3 weeks ago and the lady next to me specifically asked for tea and they said that it was not available due to the short duration of the flight. Maybe I've just been unlucky? I'm doing CBR-MEL again in two week's time so I'll look out for it because I often enjoy a tea with the snack.

Saw the video today on PER-SYD (without sound as the IFE failed - that's another story) but what I thought I saw was the person in the vid putting all their rubbish in the bag, including the juice bottle which I know they separate anyway.
In any case they didn't even give out the bags on this flight!
