I almost always opt to print a paper boarding pass (especially internationally) as it is needed if points don't post and you need to make a claim. Wondering if a screen shot will be accepted going forward, given they wont issue a pass?

Assume they will need to still be able to print passes for any oldie who doesn't have a smart phone and extend the free wifi to the non secure side of the terminal so that tourist without data roaming can get their digital boarding pass.

Yes there is far more wasteful items namely - plastic cups, supplying duplicate serviettes, plastic cutlery. They really need to adopt the bamboo cutlery (which is biodegradable) or go back to using metal cutlery and non single use cups.

Yes it does seem ambitious, there would be certain groups who don't have a smart phone, and even if they do, would struggle using it for boarding. I know elderly relatives who turn their phone off and put it away on their handbag well before boarding, They don't want the hassle of one more thing to juggle. However, if they went to facial recognition and free-for-all seating .. it would make it very very easy.

I can’t see it being 100%. They can stop issuing plastic FF cards and therefore stop all receipts at the gate. Encourage everyone to print BP at home by charging a fee for them at the airport.

But some people are going to rock up to check in without a phone.

Also, what about those connecting to partners that won’t accept mobile boarding passes?

I feel that there’s going to be a number of caveats on this.

I would imagine FF cards are only going digital for those who haven't activated Qantas Cash.

The QF news release makes no mention of all BPs being scraped, just unnecessary ones. I would expect paper BPs are still required for many flights to and from foreign countries, so the paper BP is unlikely to be abolished just yet. News.com.au reporting or Qantas spokesperson likely incorrect on this (I'll let you predict which one)

I think all is well and good if people opt in for these things, but I can't imagine it being near 100% take up if so. I am yet to find value in any of their current digitizing of processes: the digital boarding passes have from my observation caused delays several times at the gate as the staff try to scan it at the right angle to get a reading, and online check in really just shifts the risk to the traveler as you are encouraged to check in before you even reach the airport and wear all responsibility for what happens inbetween.

Now if they attached a small incentive like a few hundred QFF points to using these digital passes I could see utilization go up for a fairly small cost to QF, but it certainly wouldn't be the cheaper approach.

People like my mum in law dont have a smart phone. Yes, we would never let her board a flight alone but thats not the point. Lots of people dont have smart phones for digital passes.

That article says

It just says unnecessary. At no point do they say they will get rid of all boarding passes. I don’t think they can.

Also I’d expect an opt in for FF cards at least for WP and above. Some lounges around the world insist on seeing physical cards. But sure, get rid of bronze and silver.

It's a great initiative in its own right and worth supporting! It's sad to see how perfectly fine recyclable material goes to mixed waste these days so any step in avoiding waste and processing it better is welcomed.
I would assume many of the items will be 'on request only' basis: you could request to get a membership card, you could request a paper BP, etc, but by default you'll be offered the digital version first.

I for one will be moving from my smart phone to a standard flip (no frills) phone as soon as practicable.

Would be interesting to see how this will work for school groups, scout jamboree, etc. My daughter took four flights in the past year without her parents, all domestic, and did not have and was not allowed to take any kind of phone with her. BNE-CBR-BNE for the grade 6 Canberra trip, and BNE-ADL-BNE for the Scout Jamboree.

I don't like this. As someone else stated, I often keep my boarding pass in-case of any issues with claiming points/sc. Electronic devices can fail, also.
