I think I know the answer already but what the heck...say I've purchased a J fare, somehow managed to get an upgrade to F, so I get J's SC, F or no SC at all? Pretty sure it's gonna be J but just to be sure

Thanks in advance

When you paid for a J fare you'll get J SCs even if you use points to upgrade to F or get an op-up.

You're right it is SCs for the class you purchased, i.e. J.

Enjoy the trip and select your new seat ASAP.

Thanks flyingfan and Hvr. Yeah I sorta knew the answer but needed a confirmation...cheers :D

Only way to earn F SC, is to pay an F fare thus earning F SC, (as I am doing on Christmas Day MEL - AKL), and then using P + P on that F fare, reducing the fare with QFF points.
Granted its a very expensive way of doing things, and only useful for TT, but its an even way to get that 120 QF SC trans Tasman.

Why would anyone think they should get F SCs when they upgraded on points?

Why wouldn't some think so?

For many it's only after experiencing the nuances of a program that they find out.

AFF (and FT) is a great resource - many are not aware of how useful it can be.

Full credit to the OP for asking - in that they know know, before travel, on what to expect.

By they way, to the OP, I suspect this is your first such upgrade - congratulations ... and enjoy!

someone who is new to all this? Not unreasonable question, do SC come from travelled class or booked class, when you don't know how it all works.
Yes a fair question I agree. But still, why would anyone seriously think they can get F SCs on an upgrade? Just wishful thinking I suggest.

Interested in this, if you don't mind going into a little detail?

Occasionally several Trans Tasman routes can be had for 36k + ~$110 return in Y. This is essentially $57 cheaper than a classic award and comes with points and SCs.
