I read that while loads to Malaysia does not make it economical for QF to offer flights there, why would they not offer Codeshare with MAS for flights to KL or Penang ? To get to KL, I normally would have to get there via SIN and then take a 3K flight (which can get quite close depending on QF81 arriving into Singapore).

Also, we get zero to none SC when flying with MH into KUL from Australia.

Or is the reason that they would cannibalize their 3K loads from SIN to KUL if they were code sharing with MH to KUL ?

I believe that QF sponsored MH to join Oneworld so why would they not co-operate on a code share ?

Always intrigued about this now that borders are re-opening and I am again looking to time my flights into SIN and then to KL.

I think there's little to gain from QF selling codeshare tickets to KL, they don't want the onward connections to Europe (competes with its own flights as well as EK alliance) and if people want to go to KL they should just book with MH. They can still be combined with QF flights for domestic connections.

If I recall around the time QF sponsored MH into oneworld, they were investigating a partnership and even floated the idea of a merger, but it turns out they went with EK. MH17 and MH370 happened shortly after they joined oneworld which probably didn't help, as MH is a shell of its former self now.

As for the SCs, they have a habit of doing that to routes they want to discourage (eg BA to LHR) - I'd say they want the extra traffic to SIN - not sure they care about the 3K connection all that much.

Pretty much the above, plus QF would prefer to put pax on its own metal to SIN and then 3K or whatever up to KUL (as annoying as that is for those who would prefer the nonstop). MH has got to want to sell the capacity to QF(and QF has to want to buy it) for codeshares, and there are obviously reasons why this is not a thing they want. QF would clearly prefer revenue "in house" than to MH (and as above the savage earnings on Oz-Malaysia, and Malaysia-europe(ie LHR) is evidence of how much QF do not want people to fly on them.

I've done the MEL-KUL-LHR run on MH in J and F/"mini first" and it's actually pretty pleasant imo. Timings work too. Well pre pandemic at least.

Yep, I find their service quite decent.
As someone who flew with them a couple of times per year pre pandemic the treatment of MH by QF was a big consideration when I switched to BAEC.

I do agree that MH service is decent and they do offer some attractive fares into KL at times, its just hard to justify flying direct without the SC that could be earned.

Their KL lounges are pretty good especially the First Class Lounge.

MH fares have historically been attractive because they've been competing against AirAsiaX (who effectively have gone broke and had a big debt write-off and new equity) and more recently Malindo.
