Oh I agree... I just never saw a portable one til I was in the US earlier this year - and it transpires we (our US offices) have a bunch we loan to people on their way to see clients (I so wanted to steal one)

7kgs + Personal Bag is easily doable if you aren't going to be using one of them 5kg roller bags. These days I've taken to carrying a light weight 30L duffel bag for my clothes and then a small backpack for the computer, external monitor, powerpacks, cables, charges, headphones. Works fine for a few nights away.

If the airline started charging for carry-on bags, then it'd be a function of the price versus time to check-in and wait for said bags, which is on a per trip basis - direct airport to office, then I'd want time, airport to hotel the night before work - I'd be happy to wait.

I've used a Coowoz backpack for a few years which is enough for a 3-4 days of travel, depending on whether it's for work or leisure. It does the job. It usually hovers around 6kg, including an android tablet and power bank.

If I'm travelling for work I use a satchel type bag for my laptop, and the second screen if needed. It's handy for providing demos for clients, so we don't have to crowd around the one laptop.

Virgin made an interesting point today on the analyst call around this. They don’t have any plans to introduce anything but obviously indicated that average fares for Jetstar will obviously rise in the market, so what does this mean for Virgin ( ie VA increases fares to maintain the gap and bank extra revenue or gain extra revenue from the gap closing by gaining more customers who will opt for VA with a tighter gap).

Looking at average entry level fares next Feb on say MEL-SYD which is a high volume carryon route, for someone wanting to take a roller onboard, Jetstar comes out at $121, Virgin $135.

Commercial Teams will be watching this one with interest.

The fares on google flights for example don’t include like for like

In a sense, it’s a bit of “drip-pricing”
Where you monetise every single moment
Want a cushion - that’s $6
Want a toilet break - that’s &10
Want to bring 100kg of body and baggage - that’s $35 more

I wear my old army jacket. It has four large pockets where I can carry books, phones and chargers.

All my laptop bags fit 15.6" computers.

My biggest laptop bag has two compartments and a pocket on the outside. It measures 40 cm X 30 cm X 10 cm. The JQ limit for under seat storage is 40 cm X 30 cm X 20 cm.

When I flew JQ from MEL to DPS this year, I checked in through an automated kiosk. So, no human checked my carry on luggage.

I wonder if the FAs would notice if I put my jacket and my laptop bag in the overhead storage after 1 February 2027?
