QF Flight returns to SFO after engine blows up

Longer trip than normal for QF73 today :)
Now if they could just figure out how to supply fuel and controls to the 5th engine, they could make it shorter trip  Then the extra 20% thrust would more than compensate for the extra drag ... but the extra fuel burn may result in "landing" somewhat sort of the planned destination :-|

Although not common incidents, give more sway to those 4 engined QF planes than the 2 engined V-Aus ones.
So is a 4-engined aircraft twice as likely to experience an engine failure than a twin-engined aircraft, thus making the 2-engined aircraft less likely to require a diversion/return and hence more likely to arrive on time?

Ah, better to be late than dead.

Like when I see people running across George St in Sydney traffic against the don't walk to save 15 seconds and have a higher risk of death and maiming. Personally I prefer to reduce my risk and be 15 seconds late.

Everyone has a different measurement of what's important.

Unlike Piston engines, Jet engines have a higher probability of failure for aircraft with 4 than 2.

Keep in mind no aircraft has suffered two independent engine failures that would not have failed 4 had the aircraft been a 4 banger, in which case having two or 4 would have made no difference, other than affecting the gliding rate of descent.

Are the RR engines more likely to fail then other engine brands?

I can't remember if previous QF engine failures (surges etc.) have been RR, GE or a mix.

There is a great pic of a MH 777 out of Stockholm who had a pretty spectacular engine failure if anyone is interested!

This data from Boeing although a little old now would seem to indicate the RB211 is up there regardless of the aircraft type:

Then there is 5th law of aviation physics that states that following an engine failure, the remaining engines will always generate sufficient thrust to get the aircraft to the crash site.

Thanks for the replies to my questions.

Love the 5th engine

For the record the engine makes the trip without the blades, they get a J seat :shock::shock::shock:

Good to hear no one is hurt by this .....

Live ATC have a recording up on the event, very professional dialog from the crew, if you ever wonder why I prefer an airline that hires Australian pilots have a listen!

This actually make me feel safer flying on QF. A significant incident handled well by competent pilots. Similar to the recent CX incident and the Hudson river incident.

The CX incident was an Aussie crew.
