QF/EK tickets, cancellations?

Hello folks. Looking at PER-LHR one way in September.

I see Qantas offer both QF and EK tickets for the same flights, is there any real difference? Do we still get to earn QF points if flying on an EK ticket bought from Qantas?

In terms of the one way, I see there's a heavy loading, but that a flex fare doesn't attract a cancellation charge. Seems to me that I could 'lend' Qantas fifteen hundred bucks or so for a couple of months instead of paying the one way loading. Any reason that won't work?

Points but no status credits if flying on an EK flight number. Also if you're a QP member you won't get access to the lounge in DXB unless on a QF flight number.

If you cancel the return portion of a round trip fare after travelling on the outbound, the fare is recalculated as a one-way and this offset against the orginal purchase price before any refund is applied; often there is nothing left.

I'd be buying 80,000 AAdvantage points and travelling on September 5. PER-BNE-NRT/HND-LHR with the first two legs in J on QF and the last in F on BA. Taxes are USD374.50.

More dates available for 45,000 points if you're happy travelling in Y.

Award bookings can come into their own for one-way trips.

(Noting, of course, that "AAdvantage accounts less than 30 days old are not permitted to Buy or Gift Miles.")

PER-SIN-LHR would be much friendlier time-wise and can be booked using LifeMiles, but only in Y that I can see.

Using the Points + Pay option it comes to 23k LifeMiles + USD567.23 (including taxes) at the "sweet spot".

If you buy those 23k outright at the full price, it would come to USD759, or USD1326.23 (roughly AUD1800) all up.

But there is currently a share promotion on, and at first glance it doesn't appear that new accounts are excluded. So you'd set up two accounts, buy 1,000 points for USD33, and then transfer between accounts until you get the remaining 22k, which would come to USD330. So USD567.23 + USD33 + USD330 = USD930.23 or around AUD1250.

[The "sweet zone" is actually for 23,000–34,000 points + cash, and using the transfer method it's perhaps easiest to buy 32,000 points.]

You just have to be smart about it and as others have suggested either book it as one way award travel or purchase a one way friendly fare.

You can join a program and purchase points so you don't have to have accrued a single point by flying.

Have a look at one way JQ airfares ex PER to SIN or DPS then use the www.skyscanner.net website to price one way fares ex SIN or DPS to Europe.
