QF Boxed Dinners

A new month brings new(ish) dinner box choices. On my flight from MEL to SYD, I was offered a choice of either a Japanese chicken quinoa salad (which I had before) or a baked vegetable pasta with cream sauce.

I'll add my 2 cents on this... I too was surprised in a good way with the box dinner on that final 767 flight.. and it seems like it was a normal meal in those terms. I had the chicken biryani with some roti and while it perhaps looked not so great in the box, it tasted excellent, and there was a lot of it. I wound up thinking it was perhaps more filling and tasty than the J food. I'm rarely in Y these days (yay!) but honestly this was pretty good IMHO - I'd definitely eat it again and be pretty satisfied - at least on a short sector like MEL-SYD

Compared to VA Saver Lite where we get nothing for "free" (included in fare) guess even a yoghurt bar and fried flour star shapes snacks is ok.

"Guests receive a complimentary inflight snack and selected non-alcoholic beverages on the following flights:

Between Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane
Between Sydney and the Gold Coast
Between Melbourne and Adelaide or Hobart
Between Melbourne and Kalgoorlie"

"In addition we also offer a selection of complimentary beer, cider and wine on flights between Australian mainland capital cities, with a schedule departure time between 5pm and 7pm, Monday to Friday."

On SYD-BNElast week we were served cheese, tomato and capsicum finger sandwiches as the snack which is an improvement (albeit they were tiny) over the usual biscuits.

Notwithstanding the fact the even saver lite has inclusions. You do get to save a big chunk of money for free on a saver lite. It's the cheapest fare, it is usually much cheaper than Qantas. What more do you want? A five course meal by a Michelin star chef?

Would the "baked vegetable pasta with cream sauce" be the same "pasta with pumpkin, bacon and cream sauce" served on last night's 694 (below)?

Actually looks better here than it tasted. In a word: slop. Pasta was so soft, the plastic fork ran through it, had to be scooped-up; only the pumpkin had any flavour - for the first time in years I found myself digging out the "pepper" in order to instill some (any!) flavour.

I flew BNE-SYD with my wife. She chose this dish while I had some type of curry.

I agree with your comments. Pasta dish good, but taste was bland and boring and we only ate half of it. Would avoid this dish from now on.

CNS - BNE yesterday afternoon.

Fried rice with chicken thigh.

Very nice. More sauce and it would have been better. They did a drinks and food service, but no tea/coffee.

OOL-SYD last night, no boxed dinner - was on a half tray and a traditional foil container

disgusting, fatty beef ragu and pasta which most around me returned half neaten.

a follow on from the equally disappointing "south west" beef which resembled vomit after a curry on a big night out in the lounge!

Choice of paella with chicken or tortellini on MEL-BNE last night, neither of which have been mentioned so far. I already had some pasta at the lounge earlier so I decided on the paella instead, but didn't like the taste or the texture of the rice.

That looks delicious.

Quick Question,

How often are there vegetarian options in the dinner boxes/Are there any vego options for purchase etc?

The guy in my row on the MEL-BNE flight was served his own dinner box separately at the start of the meal service and I think it may have been a vegetarian option...
