Hi my flight from SYD to BKK on QF23 for 15 October has been cancelled too. The lady at QF said it was due to an aircraft being "out of service". Tried to push me onto the Emirates flight on the same day (is that sinister, conspiracy theorists?) but I have now been moved to 14 October. Wonder if that will be cancelled too. Bit disappointing as I had to go and change my annual leave request and change my hotel plans.

If you were offered the EK options on the same day as the original flights, why would you move to a different day then complain about having to change hotel/leave plans (genuine question)? *Looking at the rough timings of the flights I do see your point.
QF are undertaking their 330 refurb program starting around that time, so the "Out of Service" may not be that far off.

probably full because they cancelled all the other flights around that day and chucked everyone on one flight haha

Don't really like the timing of the EK flight from SYD-BKK - leaves SYD in the evening and arrives in BKK at 1am, so I would be "wasting" a days leave in effect. Also prefer the 2-4-2 seating on the QF A330. So just brought both flights forward a day, hopefully no further changes.

Ended up talking to the NZ call centre last night to change the booking, the guy I spoke to was nowhere near as helpful as the lady I spoke to in the Aust call centre during the day on Monday.

Off topic but I had no idea Qantas had a New Zealand call centre. Is this new or has this been around a while?

It really does depend, for those who have a little bit of flexibility in finishing times at work, an 18:45 departure could actually "save" a days leave by working and then heading to the airport, or for those returning to Asia (ie. a day not wasted just travelling). But if you don't have that flexibility, I can see it would be a waste of a days leave. A classic case of YMMV!

The irony of this is look back through the pages for when Qantas retimed these flights (and Singapore) to do an early arrival and there where howls of protest for the exact oposite reason you mention. Guess it goes to show that everyone has their own preference and an airline can never please everyone.

Am wanting to book J and Y awards for June 2015 using AA points. ANy thoughts on whether this is too risky - my understanding is if they cancel the flight on an award booking then you are stuffed unless there is an existing ff seat open. thanks

No one here will be able to say with certainty.

For what it is worth June is not normally the time they cancel flights to that part of the world. Demand drops during the peak of the rains which is Sep/Oct.

You should be right. If QF cancel and wont reaccommodate you then AA could reroute you via KUL or HKG-no extra points doing these unlike QF.I have successfully used a J award to BKK in June 2 years ago.Not that it means anything of course.
