I currently have two J seats booked to LAX with the ultimate goal of getting 6 x J seats to LAX in Dec all within 48-72 hours of each other. The remaining 4 seats will be booked using AA miles and will not be able to be booked yet due to the 331 day window on AA. QF currently has 2 PE seats available on the same flight that I have the J seats on. Also available as YASA's at classic award rates.
Should I book them now as a back up and cancel if the AA awards are available same day ( knowing that can't book PE on AA) or wait and see what availability AA has next week ?? Currently QF is showing 2 x J seats on the earlier flight to LAX same day.
Any thoughts appreciated

As always, what are the rules for cancellation / changes on the YASA's and the WASA's?

Sorry Princess but unlikely to get 4 J Aawards Syd-LAX.I have been looking at this myself(but only to see what it might be like for 2014 so dont worry).Generally only 1 sAaver award in J on each of the flights so may get 2 from SYD,1 MEL and 1 BNE.Looking just now at 29/11 if you put 2 pax in the only choice is HA via HNL.However there is 1 J and 1F sAavers on QF 93 ex MEL on that day-the F Aaward only costs 10000 more miles so wise to check both classes.

Will do thanks drron
Looking like the WASA's might be a good back up plan if I can cancel them

As a family man, I'm always on the hunt for 4 F/J award seats - I'll be absolutely floored if you manage to get 6

However, this is why I joined AFF/FT - ready to learn & see how the masters fly! No doubt it's been done before & will hopefully (for you) be done again. Good luck.

Think it's 5000 points per ticket for the Classic not sure about the WASA's as I've never booked and cancelled one
Classic awards verily have their own 5k cancellation penalty.

As for "any seat awards", the rules can vary a lot. However they are presented during the booking process so can be checked our with a "dummy booking"

The WASA's have a $300 per person cancellation fee, JASA's (at classic award rates) on the earlier flight that day are fully refundable without penalty
Decisions, decisions!!!
I'm stalling due to the 10 x Fees and charges on Award tickets QF v AA

Posting here sure helps to clarify the thought processes :D
I've now booked daughter no 1 and 2 on QF 107 JASA's, same day as Shrek and Jnr leave ( 1st Week Dec), they can keep their AA miles for later
Now to find those AAwards for myself and daughter no 3, the fun continues ;)
I'll update whether I get any luck or not and thanks for the help folks !

Quite often I find an F and a J Aaward on QF93 out of MEL.But who would then sit in F!

Now that there is only two of you - more importantly one of them being you;) If you get stuck you could go via HKG.....JASA up to HKG & then classic award CX F to LAX:cool:

Well done Amaroo, never thought of combining a classic award with ASA, we go to HKG usually twice per year on CX out of CNS and been looking at going to Canada, will put thinking cap on now.

Trying to get 4 seats in a prem cabin with QFF is not the easiest of tasks. I've taken the family on some wacky routes to ensure the best ROI for using the points & a holiday we actually want - lucky we all like flying.

Yep, not easy. But managed recently at 350 days out: 4 x JASA, 4 x CLASSIC J, 4 x CLASSIC F & 4 x CLASSIC J to complete the journey

If you have access to *A airlines that may present other options too.

I'm very close to trying this strategy. I've got <800 SC until I hit LTG....at which time I'm planning on turning into a promiscuous flyer with a wallet loaded with CC's that distributes to non QF FF accounts. Hopefully, VA will hurry up & become a real *A player.

I've also got 150K Avianca-Taca LifeMiles.
Will look at maybe getting to Asia on either OW or *A and from there to LAX as well.
Keeping all options open at present but glad I now have 4 seats on the same day flying direct.
I figured that since I'm the "Freaky Flyer" member of the family the wackiest routing and combination could be done my me with my mini-me in tow ;)

AA fly from NRT and F sAaver awards from there are available most days when I look for 2 of us.J Aawards are a little less common but still good availability for 2 pax.So if you can get to NRT there should be no problems.
Looking just now 2 F awards available on every day in november until 27th and 2 J awards on 24/27 days.62500 for F,50000 for J.This is for NRT-LAX.In august I have F aawards NRT-BOS and the taxes for both of us totalled $US5.20.

I like the sound of this, thankyou :)
Mini-me and myself must travel in the same cabin otherwise she will be classed as an unaccompanied minor and ineligible for an International Award ticket with AA miles

Have been reading the AFF help for you and your mini-me to get to Los Angeles. Moving 6 is quite close to the ultimate brain teaser and could only be topped by those with larger families. Our AFF community have come up with some good options.
Are you planning to be in Los Angeles for a while or is it a starting point for a Chevy Chase style of going to Wally World?
