QF award booking on AA changed not enough transit time

TL;DR - the connection is quite straightforward and doable, but I'd still ask QF to change if they can

AA73 often flies right next to TBIT in T4, not in it, which is closer to the SFO-LAX gates (which are likely T5).

You won't get any lounge time, and you might walk right off of one plane to the other.

But if Qantas won't reschedule the earlier flight, you'll be protected, and ok.

Also, depending on winds LAX-SYD flight duration may imply landing before curfew in SYD, at which point AA will have extra incentive to delay departure by 30-45 min to wait for connecting passengers and bags

Thank you for all of your useful guidence. So in summary I won’t have any recourse with QF and I’m stuck with the short connection (and I need to buy a pair of running shoes) ?
It seems you‘re not the only one having this issue (which is primarily is due to AA doing what most US airlines do and shakeup their schedules like a game of pickup sticks every three months or so - sometimes that can be used to your advantage).

Meanwhile, if this was a QF classic reward booking, other angles to try are:
1. Can they rebook you on QF12? (check the schedule, but I think it leaves later than AA - it’s in QFs power to release a seat)
2. Is QF flying SFO-SYD on that day? Again, it’s within QFs power to release a seat in their metal.
3. more left field, any options via Vancouver or Dallas?

If it’s any reassurance, over the weekend, my sister had a flight arriving in T6 that was over 2 hrs late connecting to QF in TBIT. According to FlightAware, the time between arrival and push back of the two flights ended up being just 49mins and she made it. (Although the QF flight pushed back 17 mins late).

But in what basis? Worth a try, but it is well within MCT. Not sure qf will release seats on that basis?

I don't think QF would release seats for an AA schedule change, but AA may do so for other flights they have.

Hi Everybody, I had a AA award booked with QF from SFO-LAX-SYD. I just had an email from QF changing the SFO-LAX leg, this will only give me 54 minutes transit time in LAX.

I'm not to sure what I should do here so would welcome your advice. is 54 mins enough? and if its not what's the best course of action ?
We should find each other at SFO. I am on the exact same flight and have spent 2hrs on the phone to Qantas 3 separate times today to try and resolve this but they won't budge.

1. I booked a Business award flight and as it's 1 ticket SFO > SYD they cannot change the SFO > LAX part as AA has no award booking seats available on any other flights (even though there is a 2pm and 4pm flight with cash seats available)
2. I asked what would happen if I just paid for my own seat from SFO and didn't turn up to the AA awards flight out of SFO. Qantas said AA would cancel my full ticket as a no show...lol
3. Qantas have said the transit rules state 40mins minimum is acceptable for this flight/same terminal transfer and as we have 54-56mins then "that's within rules and fine"
4. I've check flight status and I cannot find the SFO flight to see if it's ever on time, but the LAX flight actually historically leaves 10mins earlier than scheduled. So that means we actually have ~45mins to transfer haha

I don't imagine it'll be relaxing for us at SFO while we wait for the flight, and learn of it being delayed. Even by 5-10mins!

Big Red, I feel your pain. QF also stated they will not do anything as the MCT is 40 . I really can’t afford to be delayed by a further day into SYD if I miss the connection. I wonder if AA will just book us onto the next flight with J availability

As mentioned earlier in one or other thread, I believe QF12 departs a little under 1 hr later than AA to SYD (plus whatever times QF to MEL and BNE depart?). So there are potentially options besides o/n in LAX.

Rebooking will be the default - assuming there are seats are available. If offered a lower class of travel, there ought to be compensation but not proportional. You should be given the option to decline and take J or higher on next available. Others may have recent experience on how that’s worked in practice.

BUT, if your in bound from SFO arrives on time, you WILL make the connection - no Olympic sprint required - just no lounge time in between.

Qantas (on each of the calls) said AA would rebook us on the next available flight in the same cabin.

There are a number of 6am departure flights from LAX> SYD. Only annoyance is they're through Dallas. But I suppose that's what the reality is.

I've been told QF12 has no J award availability to move me to wiithin 3 days of my August 14 flight. I assume if any flight has an empty J seat at departure then I'd get it last minute just to get me out of LAX.

Correct. In the event of a misconnect airline staff at the airport don’t need to be looking for award seats… any seat is up for grabs.

If there was a significant delay on your outbound from SFO, such that you were likely to miss the connection, staff at SFO could put you on the non-stop SFO-SYD, either on QF or UA, or even on NZ via AKL.

Lots of options.
