Im not reading "Guest of" so maybe hes a self funded blogger selling his story?
If you're talking about the writer referenced in Quickstatus's post he's not a blogger - he's a staff travel writer for The Sun. Guess his employer didn't stump up business class (or even premium economy) fares for him.

Nope - he's a travel writer for UK newspaper:

Bland food and aching bums - we try Qantas's new Perth to London 17-hour flight

News.com lifted it from there.

So really, his is the only report we should acknowledge as reality for Joe Blow.

Remind me to never ever book that route in Y (probably not in J either really). Seventeen hours of dark, no thanks!
Guess it solves the screens up or down issue! But 17 hours of screens down will really be like in a tunnel the whole time.

The only reason that the QF787 has garnered so much hyperbole is because journalists are reporting it.

There is another flight AKL-DOH which is a few km longer than PER-LHR, operated by I think a B777-200LR. DFW-SYD is often longer (time) than LHR-PER. Nothing revolutionary.

Yes Airlines are trying to find a point of difference in a very competitive market. Good luck to them.

However the reporting, like all reporting should be based on facts, not repeating hyperbole like many have done.

I would need to be drugged to do that trip in Y
A couple travelling next to the reporter/blogger was originally travelling on the QF9 via DXB. They must have booked very early but then was involuntarily put on the PER flight when DXB was no longer. So it was not their first choice

<sorry for off-topic, but are you pasting the URL in the address bar of your browser? Or, what I think is a better way, click on the post number at top RH of a post. That brings up a dialog box. If you copy the link at the top of that box, that always works for me. If you just past the URL 'naked' - that is, not over some selected text, it will come up as the thread title. If you want to reference an entire thread, then do that for post #1 in the thread. Apologies if this is what you already do, in which case I don't know why its giving the error :( .>

Here we go: apparently only one journalist who was is Y the entire PER-LHR flight and so journaled a true Y experience

To be fair QF warns about not being allowed to lie on the floor on much, much shorter routes. Also the journalist thinks the plane has first class...

But all in all probably the best review of the new service as yet.

If they can't fill the inaugural flight when can they fill the plane?

The economics of flying via PER do seem to be quite questionable.

It's The Sun, what is to be expected?

I don't think I put it together when PER-LHR was announced that the entire flight will be in the dark :eek::eek:. Sure, when I've flown USA-Australia with QF, it has commonly been in the Northern winter or late autumn, so the daylight is a bit short up here and the flight is in the dark nearly the entire way, but at least the sun is up when landing in Australia. Landing in the dark after 17 hours in the dark and having started in the dark does sound brutal...

And those Y seats on the 787-9 look awfully small, that chap doesn't look big at all but the seat looks tiny.

That’s why we have journalists - to scratch below the surface, not just accept the press releases by Qantas about their “Probiotic infused menus” and Neil Perry name dropping.

But up till now very few sought to look beyond.

And the turbulence mitigation system?. Anyone report on what it really is?. Dig a little deeper or just accept it as fact?
Here is a bit of info:

Like so much in the media - if it sounds and feel good then it must be good.

This is also part of SQ's announcement routine.

According to a post at TPG, the first proving flights will not be flown at full passenger capacity, nor will they carry any cargo, while QF determines the operational range of the aircraft on this route.
