Hi,

I've managed to book J class award seats for 16th Dec. I'll have a couple of nights in Tokyo before heading to LHR with BA on a J award. I've just realised that this will be the first flight for this QF route so I have a few questions:

1. What chance is there of this flight not going ahead as the booking says subject to regulatory approval?
2. Do Qantas tend to do anything special for inaugural flights?
3. Will PJ's be provided on this flight with it being a day flight?

thanks

As I've flown MEL-NRT non-stop on QF several times, I guarantee you it's not an inaugural flight. It's one of those flights that comes and goes in the QF inventory.

Thanks for the clarification! :D

I was looking at seats MEL-NRT the other day for Feb and the note said 'flights from 26 March are subject to regulatory approval'. I just did a dummy booking for 16 Dec and it says the same thing... so it looks like they have approval already for the initial flights until then.

According to discussion in another thread here n AFF it doesn't look like PJs are regularly offered on day flights. Maybe if it is an 'sort of' inaugural they might offer them if they have press and other PR people on board they're trying to impress.

I also saw the 'from 26th March' note and it did have me worried. But your explanation makes good sense with them potentially having approval up until that date.

I'm hoping that they do treat the flight as an 'inaugural' which might lead to some extras!

26 March is the first day of the northern summer 2017 season, so they are probably waiting for confirmation of slots and timing before removing the disclaimer for those flights

Qantas have not flown this route for over 7 years, so whilst it's not the first 'inaugural' journey for QF on this sector, I suspect both Qantas, MEL airport and tourism authorities will celebrate the route re-launch with much activity surrounding the QF check-in area. My guess, but maybe expect to see some performers in Traditional Dress.

On the flight itself, QF may possibility alter the menu to celebrate the routes return with a Japanese flavour/twist. Only guessing though.

QF last flew MEL-NRT in 2008 (I was booked on MEL-NRT for Oct 2008 having booked it in June, only for them to pull out of the route in July).
The "subject to regulatory approval" is just them waiting for DOT, MLIT and NRT to sign off on it - which will happen. NRT just needs to confirm the slots. AU and JP have open skies with unlimited capacity/flights (expect to HND). The only issues with any AU-JP flights are slots and parking spaces at the airports.
